The world of Star Wars often revisits earlier stories, so it makes sense that the popular Disney+ series Andor is getting the same treatment. Lucasfilm and Penguin Random House have announced a new novel called Edge of the Abyss by Rebecca Roanhorse, which is the second book in the Reign of the Empire trilogy and features connections to the events of Andor.
While the first Reign of the Empire book, Mask of Fear, took place some time before the events of Andor, the new novel, Edge of the Abyss, is set much closer to them. According to io9, the story will include characters from the Andor series, specifically Maarva Andor and Kleya Marki, who quickly became fan favorites.
The upcoming comic, Edge of the Abyss, will include stories featuring Luthen and Kleya, as well as characters from Andor who were established in the broader Star Wars universe, such as Mon Mothma and Bail Organa. Other returning Andor characters in the comic will be Anto Kreegyr, Perrin Fertha, and Ledia Mothma.
The new novel, Edge of the Abyss, will take readers back to Ghorman – a planet fans of Andor will recognize as a key location in the early days of the Rebellion. The story may introduce events that lead into future storylines.
What is Star Wars: Reign of the Empire — Edge of the Abyss
Penguin Random House has released the full synopsis for Star Wars: Reign of the Empire — Edge of the Abyss. It reads:
This exciting follow-up to The Mask of Fear takes place a year before the events of Andor, where the Empire begins using truth as a means of control.
More than ten years after the Empire took over, people have grown used to living under its control. The time of the Republic feels like a distant memory, and many have even forgotten it completely.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really captivated by what’s happening with Mon Mothma and Bail Organa. It’s heartbreaking to see their power slipping away in the Senate – it’s clear the Emperor’s will is the Empire, and there’s just no room for dissent. Bail’s starting to realize real change won’t come from politics, but from those fighting in the shadows, which is exciting and a little scary. But Mon… she’s discovered something truly chilling: the Empire isn’t just crushing rebels, they’re actively trying to control the next generation, even targeting their own children. It’s a terrifying realization, and it feels like things are about to escalate dramatically. Seeing Mon and Bail’s daughters in the crosshairs really hits home – the Empire will stop at nothing.
Throughout the galaxy, various rebel groups are isolated, labeled as criminals, and forced to compete with each other. On the planet Ghorman, a hopeful group of students is trying to improve things, but they don’t know an Imperial spy is working against them. Leaders like Saw Gerrera and Anto Kreegyr are constantly arguing and making deals just to stay alive under the overwhelming power of the Empire. Trust is scarce, and betrayal happens quickly. A resistance that’s divided and chaotic is easily defeated. True heroes are rare, and lasting alliances are even rarer.
If one of Gerrera’s followers is captured by the Empire, it’s a race against time for everyone hoping for a brighter future – senators, those living on the fringes of society, spies, and rebels alike. The captured individual holds information that could allow the Empire to crush all opposition, stopping any rebellion before it gains momentum and solidifying their control over the entire galaxy.
You can now pre-order Star Wars: Reign of the Empire — Edge of the Abyss, which will be released on September 15th.
