Be warned: this article contains spoilers for Shrinking season 3, episode 7, “I Will Be Grape.” Luke Tennie, a star of the show Shrinking, discusses how a major loss will have a lasting impact on the series.
As a huge fan of Shrinking, I was completely floored by the latest episode. We’ve been following Gaby, played by Jessica Williams, as she’s really dedicated herself to helping her patient, Maya (Sherry Cola). She even started trying some new, out-of-the-box therapy ideas suggested by Jimmy (Jason Segel), which meant spending time with Maya outside of their appointments and bringing her into her social circle with people like Sean and Alice. But the end of season 3, episode 7, delivered a truly devastating blow – Gaby gets a phone call revealing that Maya tragically took her own life. It was a shocking moment and really left me reeling.
Tennie recently told Collider that Maya’s loss will profoundly impact Gaby and Sean, altering their daily lives and even how they approach therapy. He also discussed how this event will change other characters going forward, and how Maya’s influence will continue through Gaby and Sean. He then explained why the actress who played Cola was ideal for the role. You can find his full comments below.
I discovered Sherry online and quickly realized she’s incredibly prolific – appearing in numerous shows, both big and small. Her talent and genuine warmth allow her to seamlessly fit into diverse roles. She was the ideal choice for her part in Shrinking because the character needed to have a significant and lasting impact, and Sherry consistently delivers that kind of performance. Her portrayal will profoundly affect the characters of Sean and Gaby, prompting them to re-evaluate their lives and consider the benefits of therapy. Her contribution went beyond simply being charming and funny; she fundamentally changed the trajectory of these characters, making the casting crucial. A big thanks to casting directors Brett Benner and Debby Romano – they have a knack for finding the perfect performers.
Okay, so the show deals a lot with everyone coping with Jimmy’s wife, Tia, passing away, but that happened before season 1 even started. What really got to me, though, was Maya’s death. We actually got to know her during the show, and it felt like Gaby was really connecting with her and trying to help. Season 3, episode 6 left her in a tough spot, and when she stopped answering Gaby’s calls in the next episode, I was worried. Still, I honestly didn’t expect her to die. It was so shocking because it happened while everyone was together, singing and remembering Tia. It just completely blindsided me, and it was a really powerful, heartbreaking moment.
According to Tennie, Maya’s death will cause Gaby and Sean to deeply rethink their lives. Gaby, as a therapist, will likely question her approach, and Sean, who has worked hard to overcome past struggles, will also be affected. Gaby may also reconsider her plans to open a trauma center, as she’s likely to blame herself for what happened.
Okay, so things get really messy for Maya. It turns out Gaby bent the rules and took a big risk with one of her patients – a move she calls ‘Jimmy’ – and tragically, it backfired. While this ‘Jimmy’ approach has genuinely helped people like Sean, this incident is going to bring a lot of scrutiny down on it. Honestly, it feels even bigger than the fallout from the season one finale, where a patient’s actions had devastating consequences – remember the cliff incident? This new situation is going to force everyone to really question whether this unorthodox method is worth the risk.
