Ella Bruccoleri, known for her role in Call the Midwife, discusses her character in the upcoming BBC period drama, The Other Bennet Sister. In a statement about the series, which focuses on Mary Bennet, Bruccoleri explained that Mary is different from most heroines in period dramas. She doesn’t fit into a society where a woman’s appearance is considered so important, and she simply doesn’t understand why it matters.
She finds solace in books that present alternative ideas. She particularly loves Fordyce’s Sermons to Young Women, which challenges the idea that a woman’s worth is tied to her looks, instead emphasizing the importance of intelligence and religious devotion.
This 10-part series is based on Janice Hadlow’s popular book and tells the story of a lesser-known sister from Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ – one who often goes unnoticed.

The show is based on the idea that while many people admire Elizabeth Bennet, most viewers will likely relate more to her sister, Mary.
Premiering on Sunday, March 15th, The Other Bennet Sister tells the story of Mary Bennet as she emerges from the shadows of her sisters to discover who she is and what she wants, ultimately becoming caught up in a sweeping romance.
She’ll leave her family and quiet life in Meryton behind, venturing to the lively social events of London and the beautiful landscapes of the Lake District. She’s on a quest to find freedom, learn to love herself, and create a new life.

Bruccoleri explained that Mary Bennet feels overlooked by her family, which has led her to lose faith in herself. At the start of the series, she’s living a sheltered life in her small village and hasn’t experienced much beyond it.
Mary only knows these people, and she defines who she is based on what they expect of her. We recognize these characters from ‘Pride and Prejudice’, and it’s interesting to watch how they affect someone like Mary.

Sarah Quintrell wrote the scripts for most of the BBC drama – nine out of the ten half-hour episodes – with Maddie Dai writing the final episode. Jennifer Sheridan and Asim Abbasi directed the series, which was filmed in Wales.
The Other Bennet Sister debuts on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 15 March 2026.
