Fifteen years ago, David Fincher released one of his most captivating films. Already known for directing acclaimed movies like Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network, he then took on the challenge of adapting the popular novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
The popular Swedish films based on Stieg Larsson’s books paved the way for David Fincher’s American adaptation. While critics praised the movie, it didn’t perform well at the box office, sadly meaning we never got the follow-up films fans were hoping for.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Is Fincher At His Best
David Fincher’s film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a standout work for him. You can see his distinctive filmmaking style throughout the entire movie, and it feels completely consistent with his other films, even though it’s based on an existing story.
The story centers around Lisbeth Salander, a skilled hacker, and Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist. They team up to investigate the decades-old disappearance of a young woman from a prominent family, and their search reveals disturbing truths in this captivating mystery.
As a big fan of David Fincher, I always expect incredible work from him – films like The Game, The Social Network, and Gone Girl really set the standard. But I think The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a standout, truly one of his best. It’s a critically acclaimed movie, scoring an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it even earned five Academy Award nominations, which speaks volumes about its quality.
Rooney Mara truly shined as Lisbeth Salander, completely transforming into the character both physically and emotionally. Her incredible performance was recognized with nominations for Best Actress at the Oscars and Golden Globes, but unfortunately, she never reprised the role.
What Happened To The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Sequels?
Despite what you might have heard, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo wasn’t a flop. It made $232 million worldwide, which is a good amount of money. However, because the movie cost around $90 million to make, the profit wasn’t as high as some might expect. Even so, many movies with lower earnings still get sequels.
David Fincher had planned to film the second and third books in the series, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, consecutively. Originally, they were meant to come out beginning in 2013, but problems with the script caused delays. By 2014, Fincher stated that the revised script had significantly diverged from the source material.
Several factors contributed to the cancellation of planned sequels, including David Fincher’s request for a larger budget. Instead of continuing the original series, Sony released a reboot in 2018 called The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was based on a continuation of the source novels. This new film featured a different director, cast, and storyline, but didn’t stay in the public consciousness for long.
The Original Swedish Adaptation Covered All Three Installments
Before David Fincher directed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a Swedish film version was made. Noomi Rapace played Lisbeth Salander and gave a remarkable performance, making the character instantly recognizable. Importantly, this Swedish adaptation told the complete story, unlike the American films.
The original movie was a huge success, earning over $100 million despite costing only $13 million to make. While the following movies didn’t earn quite as much, they were still profitable because they were made with low budgets.
Whether the Swedish or American adaptations are better is still up for discussion, but seeing the complete story in the Swedish films is a definite advantage. If David Fincher had continued with the series after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the results could have been amazing.
