The miniseries The Victim, featuring Kelly Macdonald from Line of Duty, is now available on Netflix. It first aired on BBC One in 2019 and centers around the trial of a woman accused of plotting to kill a man who was believed to have murdered her son fifteen years prior.
Craig Myers (played by James Harkness) is attacked and killed after being publicly accused online of being a child killer named Eddie J Turner. Investigators suspect Anna Dean, a character from the show ‘Macdonald,’ shared information identifying the man she thinks was responsible for her child’s death.
All four parts of the legal drama are now available on Netflix, and it’s quickly become popular, currently ranking as the seventh most-watched series in the UK.

Okay, so I just finished watching The Victim and it’s seriously good. Critics seem to agree – it’s got a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes! The Hollywood Reporter said it starts off looking like a simple mystery, but it’s actually really clever and has a lot more going on under the surface. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for something that’ll keep you thinking.
Following the premiere, Decider praised the show as potentially delivering “four hours of gripping drama.” Meanwhile, The Age described it as a deeply complex exploration of difficult emotions like pain, anger, remorse, and redemption, noting that it’s captivating right up to its surprising conclusion.

According to The Guardian, the drama is powerful because it makes us question who deserves to be considered a victim and how much evidence we need before granting that label. It asks if victims need to be flawless, how certain we must be of the facts, and what happens when the person who caused harm also experiences hardship.
The London Evening Standard described the series as gripping and full of twists, and particularly highlighted the performance of Macdonald, noting they played the tough character Dean flawlessly.

According to executive producer Sarah Brown, the series is expected to spark debate because it explores the complex and often unclear distinctions between what’s legally just and what’s morally right. It focuses on the difficult realities faced by people navigating a legal system that doesn’t always address those deeper, personal questions of fairness.
We aimed to make a TV show that would really grab viewers and get them thinking about the complex moral issues involved,” she explained. “We weren’t interested in just adding predictable plot twists; we wanted to explore the deeper, challenging questions at the heart of the story.
