Paul Mescal and Sir Paul McCartney shared a full English breakfast at a popular London cafe on Friday, and it seems Mescal was particularly attentive during their meeting.
The Irish actor has been drafted in to play McCartney in an ambitious four film anthology about The Beatles and their rise from Liverpool’s subterranean Cavern Club to become the biggest and most influential band in the world.
Now that filming was going well, Mescal, age 30, was able to meet the man he was portraying at Westminster’s Regency Cafe. The cafe is well-known for its excellent full English breakfasts and was also a filming location, thanks to its distinctive art deco design.
The Irish actor, wearing a denim jacket and jeans, seemed a bit awestruck while chatting with the famous musician on the street. They had just finished filming inside the Regency, likely for a documentary.
Paul McCartney, 83, seemed cheerful chatting with Paul Mescal, and for good reason – the Irish actor kindly held an umbrella over him when it started to rain.
The actor was recently filming scenes for the movie in Liverpool, portraying Paul McCartney. Director Sam Mendes and the film crew shot near McCartney’s childhood home, which is now maintained by the National Trust.
After attending the BAFTA Awards, Paul Mescal was spotted happily biking on an old-fashioned bicycle through the residential streets of where Paul McCartney lives, while back with the film crew.
The actor, who has received mixed reactions from fans after being cast as Paul McCartney, recently told Backstage how much he respects the iconic musician.
He shared that he was thrilled to portray someone he’s long looked up to. He added that very few people have had as significant an impact on the world as this individual.
Paul Mescal will play John Lennon in a series of four upcoming films celebrating The Beatles. He’ll be joined by Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.
The film features a talented supporting cast, with Aimee Lou Wood playing Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd, Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, and James Norton as their manager, Brian Epstein.
The series will also feature Mia McKenna-Bruce playing Maureen Starkey, John Lennon’s first wife, and Harry Lloyd as George Martin, the producer who worked with The Beatles throughout their entire recording career.
As previously reported by the Daily Mail, the upcoming Beatles biopics are being filmed at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London. Production actually began in November of last year, even though there were earlier rumors that the project had been put on hold.
Despite initial reports that Westminster Council wouldn’t permit filming at the iconic zebra crossing, the council has now told the Daily Mail that filming is approved and will happen.
Mendes had wanted to recreate the Beatles’ 1969 album cover on the crossing.
Westminster Council confirmed to the Daily Mail that they’re collaborating with film crews and will be temporarily closing the road to accommodate filming.
Last April, while at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas with the film’s cast, Shawn Mendes called the movies the ‘first time people will want to rush to the theater to watch all the films back-to-back’.
This is the first time Apple Corps and The Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have allowed their complete life stories and music to be used in a scripted movie.
Starr previously hinted that Saltburn star Keoghan had taken on the role.
He recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that he thinks his son is probably taking drum lessons, and he jokingly hopes it’s not a whole lot of them.
As someone who keeps a close eye on what’s happening in Hollywood, I’ve learned that Paul Mescal is juggling some exciting projects! While chatting about ‘Gladiator II,’ director Ridley Scott let slip that Mescal is already committed to a film about the Beatles. It sounds like he’s incredibly in-demand, which might affect his availability for Scott’s next venture. It’s fantastic to see such a talented actor getting so much attention!
Barry Keoghan recently shared that he was too nervous to make eye contact with Ringo Starr when they first met.
The actor said their meeting was wonderful, but admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he was too starstruck to look the drummer in the eye.
He remembered meeting the man at his home, where the man played the drums. He invited me to play as well, but I wasn’t drumming with Ringo.
When asked if he had a chance to get to know the musician, he explained that he did, but found it difficult to make eye contact during their conversation. He admitted to feeling nervous, similar to how he felt at that moment, but the musician encouraged him to look at him.
Titled The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the project was announced last year.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I’m SO excited! They’re making movies, each one telling the story from the point of view of a different Beatle! It’s going to start with them as these local Liverpool lads, just starting out in the early ’60s, and follow them all the way through becoming the biggest band EVER…and then, sadly, through the breakup in 1970. I can’t even imagine how amazing it’s going to be to see it all through their eyes!
This marks the first time Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, have allowed the creation of feature films based on their lives.
All four films are to be released simultaneously on April 7, 2028.
