The movie Scarpetta centers on Dr. Kay Scarpetta (Nicole Kidman) and her investigation into a possible returning serial killer, but the real heart of the story lies within Kay’s family and how this case connects to her life, both past and present, and her career. Kay is determined to catch the killer, driven by a need to stop him and also to defend her professional standing. However, her motivations are more complex than they seem, as she’s certain she caught the right person before and is keeping a significant secret.
The latter part of Scarpetta focuses increasingly on the complicated and often damaging relationships within the family. Dorothy (Jamie Lee Curtis) is truly in love with Pete (Bobby Cannavale) for the first time, but Janet (Janet Montgomery) suggests Pete has always loved Kay, causing Dorothy to question everything. Curtis delivers a powerful performance as Dorothy reaches her emotional limit.

Regarding Janet, her connection with Lucy reaches a critical point when Janet realizes (to the extent an AI can) that Lucy’s isolation with her digital companion is harmful. Ultimately, Lucy is forced to lose access to the digital version of her deceased wife. This, combined with a final confrontation with Kay, who acknowledges she’s been helping Lucy avoid dealing with her pain, causes Lucy to fall apart. Lucy’s decision to join a group that seems like a cult demonstrates how much she still needs to process her grief.
Kay and Benton, played by Simon Baker, have a strange marriage founded on deception, and it’s starting to fall apart. Benton seems to be letting Kay chase down clues he already knows the answers to, which makes you wonder if he’s prioritizing his duty as an FBI agent or his commitment to his wife. This episode finally delves into how their jobs both help and hinder their relationship. However, the biggest surprise is the discovery of Benton’s disturbing, potentially sociopathic behavior. Ultimately, Benton’s story becomes more perplexing than captivating, suggesting a tragic downfall and revealing that everyone is hiding something.

The last four episodes of Amazon’s most gripping thriller adaptation of the year reveal everything falling apart for Kay. It becomes increasingly obvious that Pete has deep feelings for her, even though she often mistreats him. His long-held secret – and the impulsive act he committed twenty years ago to protect her – demonstrates his unwavering devotion, and affectionately calling her “Doc” only reinforces it. Any lingering questions about Pete’s love for Kay are definitively answered in these episodes.
The central mystery of the season takes a strange and confusing turn in the last four episodes. The latest victim worked for a company developing 3D-printed organs and was secretly trying to sell their technology to Russia. The connection between this case and the original killer feels completely random. While the killer’s identity eventually offers a partial explanation for the victims’ skin grafts, it’s another plot point that doesn’t quite deliver a satisfying resolution.

I still have a lot of unanswered questions. We don’t know much about Benton, and Dr. Reddy’s motives remain a mystery. It’s also surprising how quickly Maggie changed her mind and decided to help Kay. Bill Boltz’s story feels unfinished and doesn’t quite connect to the main plot. Plus, the man initially accused of the crimes has been completely forgotten – he’s just a minor detail now.
Wow, Season 1 just flew by, didn’t it? Nicole Kidman actually said the story was scarier than The Others, which is a bold claim! But honestly, the way everything wrapped up felt…off. It wasn’t a satisfying conclusion, more like things just stopped abruptly. It all makes a bit more sense now knowing Scarpetta was always planned for two seasons – that finale wasn’t really a finale at all, just the episode before the real conclusion.

Amazon Prime Video
The first season concludes by revealing the killer’s identity, but Kay’s response to defeating them is even more surprising. The season ends on a cliffhanger with someone approaching Kay’s door while she’s still upset – and it strongly suggests it’s Pete. While the main mystery was solved, the ending felt rushed and left many loose ends. It definitely left me wanting to see what happens next.

Scarpetta touches on the difficult themes of death and whether it’s better to accept loss or try to prolong life, even when it causes more pain. However, the show doesn’t explore these ideas as effectively as others, like Black Mirror, which has tackled similar subjects with more impact. Ultimately, these themes feel like a side note to the main plot.
These episodes tried to do too much, introducing several storylines that weren’t fully resolved. The plot felt messy, which is disappointing for a show that relies on intricate details. Scarpetta is a show you’ll likely need to rewatch to catch everything, but despite its flaws, it leaves you eager for Season 2. Hopefully, the next season will tie up loose ends and deliver a more satisfying conclusion.
