Following the announcement of the 2026 Oscar nominations, people have been discussing the choices the Academy made – what they liked and what they thought was overlooked. A lot of the conversation centers around Jesse Plemons’ performance in Bugonia, and now his wife, Kirsten Dunst, has also voiced her opinion on the matter.
Bugonia was one of the ten Best Picture nominees, and also received nominations in the Adapted Screenplay and Original Score categories, along with Emma Stone picking up a nomination for Lead Actress. But a lot of cinephiles aren’t happy with Plemons being left out of the Best Actor category. Check out with Dunst posted on her Instagram:
I always thought Kirsten Dunst and Patrick Plemons were a perfect match! They actually met while filming Season 2 of Fargo back in 2015, and it was instant chemistry. They finally tied the knot in 2022, which made me so happy for them. Now they’re parents to two adorable boys – Ennis, who’s seven, and little James, who’s four. It’s just a lovely family!
Kirsten Dunst shared a post from Bugonia actor Stavros Halkias (who plays Officer Casey Boyd) expressing his disappointment that Jesse Plemons wasn’t nominated for an award for his outstanding work. Dunst also shared a video explaining why she believes Plemons deserved to be nominated.

Critics praised Jesse Plemons’ acting as exceptional, even saying it deserved an Academy Award. Ultimately, however, the award went to someone else. The other actors nominated were Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.
In the movie Bugonia, Jesse Plemons stars as Teddy, a man who believes in conspiracy theories. He kidnaps Michelle Fuller (played by Emma Stone), the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, convinced she’s an alien. Teddy demands Michelle arrange a meeting with her “people,” leaving the audience to question whether he’s delusional or if the CEO is actually extraterrestrial. TopMob included Bugonia on its list of the best films of 2025.

Jesse Plemons has been nominated for an Oscar once before, in 2021 for his supporting role in The Power of the Dog, but Troy Kotsur won for CODA. This awards season, leading up to the Oscars on March 15th, Plemons was nominated for his performance in Bugonia at both the Golden Globes (where Timothée Chalamet won) and the Actors Awards (which will be presented on March 1st).
Among this year’s Academy Award nominees, Sinners made history with a record-breaking 16 nominations, particularly recognizing the supporting performances of Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku, who were overlooked by other award shows. There’s also been discussion about the complete shutout of Wicked: For Good and Paul Mescal’s surprising omission from the Supporting Actor category.
