MAFS groom Danny Hewitt claims HE was the worst affected by wife Bec Zacharia’s crude ‘finger comments as he rips Gia Fleur to shreds for revealing her new boyfriend

Danny Hewitt, a groom on Married At First Sight, says he was most hurt by his wife Bec Zacharia’s controversial and explicit comments made during this week’s couples’ retreat, which caused significant drama.

Danny, 34, told Daily Mail it was very difficult to rewatch the show’s events, even though he was there when they originally happened.

‘It was stressful to be fair… stressful, a bit triggering,’ he said.

It was pretty upsetting, honestly. I probably would have been better off just avoiding it and going out for a drink.

Danny was caught in the middle of drama at the retreat when his wife, Bec Zacharia, made a shocking and awkward comment – often referred to as the ‘finger bang’ incident – which became one of the most uncomfortable moments of the season.

Rachel Gilmore was upset by the comment, and it caused disagreement within the group, but Danny maintained it was just a harmless joke and he didn’t mean to offend anyone.

‘You’ve got to be able to read a room,’ he admitted.

Look, I get it – if someone made a joke at my expense, I wouldn’t even blink. But Rachel’s a bit more sensitive, and honestly, Bec really should have been more aware of the situation before saying anything. It’s all about reading the room, you know? Understanding who you’re talking to and how they might react is key to smooth social interactions.

‘With that being said, it was a joke. There was no malice meant in the joke.’

Danny said the comment happened on what everyone agreed was the best night of the whole experiment.

‘That night had been the best night in our season’s history,’ he said.

Everything at the retreat was perfect. We all got along great, enjoyed pizza together, and there wasn’t a single disagreement – it was truly unbelievable.

The producers asked Bec to give a closing speech. She told some jokes at the expense of a few people, and they were all well-received.

‘And then the last joke at the end… boom. It was a nuclear bomb.’

Why Danny and Bec fled the retreat

After things got worse, Danny and Bec decided to leave the retreat altogether.

‘That was my idea,’ he revealed.

‘I’d had enough of all the bulls**t, so I was just like, ‘Let’s get out of here.’

‘So we just pulled a bear move and we bounced.’

The two participants briefly stepped away from the study and were then taken to a hotel, separate from the other contestants.

‘Just get away for a few days, recharge the batteries,’ he said. ‘It was good to do it.’

Even though he left so suddenly, Danny claimed he didn’t have any special plan when he came back for the next dinner party.

‘With MAFS you can’t have a game plan,’ he said.

‘You’ve just got to see how things play out and adjust on the fly.’

‘I was in a lose-lose situation’

Danny confessed that being sent back felt like the most difficult situation of anyone involved in the study.

‘I’m damned if I do, I’m damned if I don’t,’ he said.

It was a no-win situation. If I didn’t defend my wife, Bec, people would criticize me. But when I did support her, she wasn’t always correct. I had to decide which outcome would be worse.

He revealed tensions had already been brewing behind the scenes before the retreat incident.

He explained there was a lot going on that people didn’t know about. He’d asked Bec to be completely loyal and supportive, to always have his back.

‘So when this all went down, I said, “I guess this is my time to prove that.”‘

Danny confessed that rewatching the episode made him second-guess some of his choices during filming.

‘When you watch it back you think, “Why didn’t I say this? Why didn’t I do that?”‘ he said.

‘But when you’re living it in the moment, you make mistakes. We’re only human.’

What really happened with Scott

Honestly, the whole drama with the retreat wasn’t just about the retreat itself – it completely destroyed Danny’s friendship with Scott, the other groom! It was heartbreaking to watch, and it all just spiraled from there. I mean, they were so close, and then…gone. It was awful.

Danny pointed out that the two men stayed calm, especially when you consider the drama happening with the brides.

‘My plan was just to speak to Scott and say let’s all be civil,’ he explained.

‘But Scott basically said he’d be civil with me but he wasn’t going to acknowledge Bec.’

‘I just said, “What kind of man would I be if I let you ignore my wife?”

‘So I said it’s either both of us or nothing.’

Danny says the two men ultimately parted ways respectfully.

We resolved the situation respectfully, with a handshake and a peaceful departure. Looking back, I was pleased with how we managed it, he remembered.

Danny’s blunt verdict on Gia

Danny didn’t hesitate to criticize Scott’s TV wife, Gia Fleur, claiming she deliberately created drama during their time at the retreat.

‘Gia is so manipulative. She’s very intelligent and very manipulative in that regard,’ he said.

She had an incredible ability to turn any situation around. Even if she entered a room full of people who disliked her, she could win them over and become the most popular person there within a couple of hours. It was truly amazing.

Danny believes Gia deliberately inserted herself into other people’s conflicts.

‘She’s playing the game. You actually have to see it to believe it,’ he said.

Danny playfully suggested that if Gia and Bec teamed up, they’d be a powerful combination within the experiment.

‘If those two were friends they could take over the world,’ he laughed.

‘Can you imagine going up against Bec and Gia? No thanks.’

Why Danny refuses to apologise

The groom also talked about a scene coming up in the dinner party episode where Gia insists he apologize to her.

But Danny said that apology will never come.

‘No,’ he said bluntly. ‘Because she doesn’t deserve one.’

Danny insisted he never directly called Gia a liar.

‘All I said was, ‘Let’s be careful who we call a liar,’ he explained.

However, he did not shy away from sharing his personal opinion.

‘She does lie. You’re going to see that moving forward,’ he added.

Danny expressed his disappointment that Gia started a new relationship with Alan Wallace, the star of Love Triangle, while her breakup with Scott was still being shown on television.

‘It’s not fair on Scott. They had a great storyline and now it’s blown up,’ he said.

Still, Danny insisted he holds no personal hatred towards her.

He clarified that he didn’t dislike Gia, but simply didn’t have any strong feelings about her one way or the other. He wasn’t invested in her life and wished her well.
