INTERVIEW – Honor of Kings India Launch: Game Producer’s insights on India-first content, financial commitment, and esports plans

The popular mobile game, Honor of Kings, is now available in India after a long-awaited launch worldwide. With a huge number of players already, the game is expected to be a big hit in India, which is one of the fastest-growing markets for mobile gaming. This is great news for gamers in the region!

I recently had the chance to chat with Dean Huang, the producer behind Honor of Kings! We talked all about what the team has planned for players in India, how much they’re investing in supporting local content creators, and the path they’re building for esports in the region. It was really interesting to hear their vision!

Please note that this interview has been edited for clarity.

A Heartfelt “Namaste” to the Indian Gaming Community

The development team has been looking forward to visiting India for a long time. Dean shared that they are incredibly excited and feel honored to finally introduce the game to players there.

As a gamer, I’ve always known India has a huge and dedicated gaming community, and it’s awesome to see Level Infinite finally launching here – it’s something they’ve been building towards for a while. It’s not just about expanding where they’re available, either; it feels like they really want to be part of the Indian gaming scene.

We’re excited to connect with and learn from the amazing Indian gaming community. We want to become a key part of India’s expanding mobile esports scene, providing high-quality entertainment that also honors local culture. We appreciate the warm reception we’ve received and are thrilled to build the future of gaming in India, both in and outside of competitive play.

Even before the game officially launched, there was a lot of excitement, with over 2 million people signing up in advance. The development team is incredibly pleased with this enthusiastic response, viewing it as strong support from their fans.

The enthusiastic response shows that Indian gamers were eager for a mobile game that’s both challenging and allows them to connect with others. This confirms our confidence in the Indian gaming market. It’s clear players appreciate the competitive, team-based, and immersive gameplay that Honor of Kings offers.”

He acknowledges these impressive numbers but sees them as motivation to do even better. He explained, “We’re excited by this growth, but it also means we need to work harder to make sure the game lives up to what our new players expect, and even goes beyond those expectations.”

₹100 Million Investment with a commitment to reflecting Indian Culture

Level Infinite isn’t just launching its software in India – it’s also heavily investing in the local gaming community. Dean announced a large plan to boost the Indian gaming scene, including a ₹10 Crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) investment to support content creators and esports. This is great news, and the details of what this investment will enable are even more promising.

Dean explains that they’re aiming to create a competitive gaming scene in India that’s exciting, culturally relevant, and something Indian gamers can be proud of. He also announced that a new hero inspired by Indian culture is currently being developed and will be added in an update coming this June.

As an Indian gamer, it’s awesome to finally see some of my culture showing up in games! The developers told me this June update isn’t just a one-time thing, but the beginning of a bigger effort to make the game feel more local. They really want to add heroes and events that connect with players all over the world, especially celebrating festivals and important moments that matter to us where we live. It’s cool they’re putting in the effort to make it more personal and relevant!

We’re planning to create more content that Indian players will truly love. This includes new characters and outfits inspired by India’s rich history and culture, as well as partnerships with local creators and special in-game events for important festivals. We want to fully integrate authentic Indian elements into the game to celebrate key moments and events throughout the year.

Efforts to bring dedicated local servers and optimization for budget-friendly devices

In fast-paced games, even tiny delays can make a difference. To ensure a smooth experience for players in India, Dean says they’ve already set up the necessary infrastructure, including dedicated servers, a local content delivery network, and a special feature called the Battle Suit Accelerator.

We’ve created a reliable and safe system. As India’s gaming community rapidly expands, we’re dedicated to helping it thrive by offering a secure and customized experience where players can confidently enjoy our game.

India’s mobile market includes many different types of phones, especially affordable and mid-range models. These users make up a large part of the country’s mobile gaming community. Because of this, Dean emphasizes that making the game accessible to everyone is a priority, meaning they’re focused on keeping costs down so hardware doesn’t prevent people from playing.

We focused on making Honor of Kings run incredibly well in India without sacrificing quality. Our team worked hard to adapt the game specifically for the Indian market and to optimize its performance on all kinds of phones – even more affordable ones that are commonly used there – so everyone can enjoy a smooth, beautiful, and competitive gaming experience.”

An outline of the plans is given below.

The game uses Adaptive Graphics Technology to automatically adjust visual settings to match your device. This keeps the game running smoothly and saves battery life, all while maintaining good graphics and gameplay.

We focus on optimizing game assets to keep file sizes small. This makes the game quicker to download and ensures it runs well on a wide range of devices, even those with limited storage or memory.

After launch, the team will constantly track how the product performs on different devices and in various locations. They’ll use this data, along with feedback from users, to release updates that improve stability and speed.

He also stated that their aim is to make Honor of Kings enjoyable for everyone, no matter what device they play on. They want players to feel the excitement, connection, and fun the game offers, and believe skill and dedication should be what matters most, not the power of the hardware.

Integrating India into the Global Esports Circuit

There’s a lot of excitement for a top-level esports competition in India, and plans for competitive play are progressing quickly. Dean announced that Indian teams won’t have to wait long to compete internationally, and the organization will soon be launching its worldwide tournament format.

Dean announced that India will have two teams competing at the upcoming EWC26 for Honor of Kings. To support this, they’re starting the Honor of Kings Campus Series (KCS), a new competition designed to build up college-level esports talent in India and give players a way to move up and compete professionally within the Honor of Kings scene.

Next, the KINGS’ Arise: India City Tour will visit Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi. Huang explains that these events provide a starting point for competitive play and a way for players to advance within the Honor of Kings esports scene.
