Kathryn Hahn confirms “perfect” casting in Disney’s live-action Tangled remake

Kathryn Hahn has officially confirmed she’ll be playing Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled. While rumors about her casting started in January, this is the first time Disney has publicly acknowledged her involvement in the film.

Hahn recently updated her Instagram, changing her username to “motherhahn” and her bio to “mother knows best.” She then posted a video showing off her outfit, which included a vintage-style t-shirt featuring the character Mother Gothel. Fans can find similar shirts on Etsy and other online stores.

I remember when the news first came out about her being cast, and honestly, Disney fans immediately loved it! So many people were saying it was the perfect choice. One fan even pointed out she’s becoming known for playing witches, but said that’s exactly why it works – and I totally get what they mean! It just feels right.

The official announcement of the cast has thrilled fans, including Joe Locke, who worked with Kathryn Hahn on the song Agatha All Along. He shared his excitement, calling it “the best news ever.”

Joining Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, Hana Hahn will appear in the live-action reimagining of Tangled. Croft and Manheim will star as Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder, respectively. Michael Gracey is directing the film, based on a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

In October 2025, plans for a remake of the film were back on, and Scarlett Johansson was reportedly being considered to play Mother Gothel, a character originally voiced by Donna Murphy.

Scarlett Johansson had to step away from the project because of her already full schedule, which includes filming The Batman: Part II and the new Exorcist movie. This created an opportunity for Aubrey Plaza to be considered for the part.

There’s no official release date for the live-action remake of Tangled yet, but filming was previously planned to begin in June. If that happens as scheduled, the movie might be in theaters around 2027.

As a huge Disney fan, I’m really hoping this live-action remake does well – like, really well! I’d love to see it perform closer to Lilo & Stitch‘s box office numbers – over a billion dollars! – rather than the more modest results of the recent Snow White remake. The original Lilo & Stitch animated movie was a big hit, earning nearly $600 million worldwide, and even got an Oscar nomination for ‘I See the Light,’ although it lost to a great song from Toy Story 3. Fingers crossed this new version captures that same magic and success!

If you’d like to revisit it, the original Tangled movie is currently streaming on Disney+.

Tangled does not yet have a confirmed release date.
