Okay, so I’m playing this game, and there’s this brotherly rivalry between Mervin and Solomon. From the get-go, these two just clash. Mervin’s super controlled, keeps everything neat and tidy, and doesn’t really show his feelings. But Solomon? He’s the complete opposite – a total wild card who’s always chasing excitement, and usually finds himself in some kind of mess. They’re basically polar opposites, and it’s pretty obvious they don’t see eye-to-eye.
The complex dynamic between them has been a highlight of the season, adding emotional weight to the mystery and making the show more satisfying than just a simple puzzle to solve. This continued to be true in the latest episode.
Hoping to repair their strained relationship, Mervin traveled to Antigua to see Solomon, but quickly found himself entangled in another one of his brother’s problems.

One of the best episodes of Death in Paradise features Mervin tied to a chair in a secluded cabin, where a local businessman named Lester (played by Ashley Campbell) has been murdered.
This new disaster sparks an immediate investigation, and Mervin is left to determine the killer’s identity: is it Solomon, or Cheech (Julian Rhind-Tutt), who may be involved in a failed and suspicious business arrangement?
Mervin suddenly finds himself in serious danger, and it’s unclear what Cheech is planning, kicking off a desperate race against time. It’s not just Mervin’s life on the line, but also his team’s, who are driven by Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas (Shantol Jackson) after she received a frantic call from Mervin right before he was attacked and captured.

Detective Florence Cassell and her partner joined Commissioner Selwyn in Antigua to investigate Mervin’s disappearance firsthand, while the rest of the team provided support from the police station back on Saint Marie.
I was so thrilled to see Sterling Fox back! Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge is just perfect in the role. Now working as an officer in Antigua, Fox is still as arrogant and petty as ever, which is hilarious. It’s great to see him bring some comic relief, especially now that he’s no longer a worry to the Commissioner.
Although Fox was enjoyable, the story’s quick pace and sense of urgency were what truly made the episode exciting. Having Mervin at the heart of the trouble also raised the stakes and kept things lively.
Honestly, what really got to me this week was watching Solomon and Mervin. It was so heartbreaking seeing Solomon desperately trying to convince his brother he wasn’t involved, really pleading with him to just believe him and trust that he was telling the truth. Their relationship was definitely put to the test, and that’s what I was most invested in.
Dealing with this wasn’t simple for the character with abandonment and trust problems. It forced the brothers to confront difficult emotions they weren’t prepared to face.

Sharing personal stories about their childhoods and their complicated relationship with their mother brought Solomon and Mervin closer. However, that connection was immediately broken when Mervin found out Solomon had been hiding a terrible secret: he was the one who shot Lester.
Solomon faced a likely prison sentence until Mervin cleverly realized that Lester and Cheech were trying to blame him for something they had done.
He asked Solomon if he was familiar with the term ‘useful idiot,’ then revealed their plan: they’d pretended Lester was dead and intended to make it look like Solomon was responsible. Lester did this to escape consequences from his illegal activities, which he’d been hiding behind his juice business.

Mervin was deeply hurt by Solomon’s significant betrayal and the lies he told, leading him to end their relationship. Solomon’s arrest solidified that decision. While not directly responsible for a murder, Solomon was involved in questionable activities and, having shot Lester, couldn’t avoid consequences.
Just before the police took him away, Solomon sincerely apologized to Mervin for all the problems he’d caused. Mervin responded with a chilly remark: “You always cause trouble, don’t you?”
It felt like a harsh blow for those hoping Mervin and Solomon’s close friendship would blossom. Especially because it represented Mervin finally connecting with his mother, and the life he always wished he’d had, through his relationship with Solomon.

“It’s good to have such a reliable team,” Solomon remarked, meaning the Honoré Police officers who’d come to help him. It did make him wonder, though, who was left to handle things back at the Saint Marie station…
Mervin finally understood what had happened, which made the team’s joyful and heartfelt celebration of his rescue even more touching.
When his team asked what he needed, Mervin simply said, ‘I just want to go home.’ This moment showed how far he’d come. He wasn’t the hesitant newcomer anymore; he now felt like part of the group.
It’s a shame this positive change in his personality happened at the cost of his bond with his brother. Their relationship with Solomon had been developing nicely, and it felt like it was heading in a good direction.

With Solomon now dealing with the consequences of his actions, the show doesn’t seem interested in forgiveness or making amends. This raises the question of why Solomon was introduced in the first place—it appears he was simply a tool to help Mervin connect with the rest of the team. This new bond gives Mervin a reason to remain on the island, as he’s finally found a place where he truly belongs.
It’s sad to see things end this way for the brothers. Mervin had a difficult childhood in foster care, and Solomon was his only connection to his mother. While it’s true that family and love aren’t always about blood relations, using Solomon to make that point feels unnecessarily cruel.
Once again, Solomon is used as a convenient pawn, subtly manipulated to move the story forward. This unfortunately detracts from what would have otherwise been a very strong episode.
