HBO hasn’t confirmed a second season yet, but the show’s creators are already planning what might happen next.

A new horror series, based on Stephen King’s novel It, premiered on HBO and HBO Max in late October. Director Andy Muschietti previously adapted the book into two movies, released in 2017 and 2019, and is now continuing the story with this new series. He recently hinted that the upcoming season will be even more impressive than before.

The filmmaker said at the Saturn Awards they were happy people had high hopes following the first season, and they plan to exceed those expectations with what’s coming next.

Since debuting on HBO Max, It: Welcome to Derry quickly became incredibly popular, breaking numerous viewership records. The series was well-received, and audiences eagerly followed each week to learn more about Pennywise’s final frightening acts and how he came to be. Even after the season finale, the show continued to perform well on streaming services.

Despite the positive buzz, It: Welcome to Derry hasn’t been officially confirmed for a second season yet. However, the people behind the show have been saying encouraging things. Most recently, HBO’s Casey Bloys shared an update…

“Let me say, not in limbo at all. Hardly. It was a huge success for us,” he said.

He said Andy and Barbara are currently brainstorming ideas for a potential new season of the show. He’s eager to participate, but it’s challenging because they’re creating the story from scratch, without a source book to guide them.

Bloys explained that the team is focused on finding a story they’re passionate about. It’s not that the project is stalled, but they need to settle on a creative direction they love, and HBO will be supportive throughout the process.

Following the Season 1 finale, co-creator Barbara Muschietti said there’s strong interest in continuing the show. She also admitted that Season 1 was exceptionally well-made and that producing the series isn’t inexpensive.

Everyone involved understands the weight of this decision,” the co-creator said. “We’re all very enthusiastic about the possibility, including Stephen King and, I believe, HBO. However, we haven’t made a final decision yet.

It: Welcome to Derry Should Last for 3 Seasons

While the official announcement is just a matter of going through the motions, the team is already actively developing the show. They had a clear vision for its direction even before the first episode aired, planning to dedicate each season to a different section of King’s book.

Director Andy Muschietti envisions the It prequel series, Welcome to Derry, spanning three seasons. Rather than a straightforward timeline, the show will unfold in reverse order. The first It film (2017) began in 1989, taking place 27 years after the events of the first season of Welcome to Derry and 27 years before the events of It: Chapter Two (2019).

As a total film and TV geek, I’m really fascinated by how they’re structuring this series. They’re planning to build each of the three seasons around a different disaster, which is cool. And get this – they’re telling the story in reverse! So, season two jumps back to 1935, and season three goes all the way back to 1908. It’s a clever way to build suspense, I think.
