Think fast: can you name seven famous ballet and opera performers? If you immediately thought of people like Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko, Misty Copeland, and Marianela Nuñez, you clearly follow the arts closely – well done! If you struggled, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Now, try to name seven major Hollywood actors working today. Chances are, many names come to mind, making it hard to choose just seven.
Timothée Chalamet is a popular actor who’s recently become a target of criticism. Just weeks ago, he was a strong contender for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “Marty Supreme.” However, his popularity has quickly declined, largely due to a perceived arrogant attitude and his relationship with Kylie Jenner.
Timothée Chalamet recently faced some criticism for comments he made in February during a discussion with Matthew McConaughey. The conversation, which was part of a Variety and CNN town hall and reached 8.35 million viewers globally, involved Chalamet expressing his support for keeping movie theaters open despite the rise of streaming services. While the comments resurfaced over the weekend, Oscar voting had already concluded.
He ended with a dramatic flourish, saying he didn’t want a career preserving traditional art forms like ballet or opera, especially since he felt public interest in them was fading.
Awards
Timothée Chalamet won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role in ‘Marty Supreme.’
He chuckled, then jokingly lamented, “No offense to ballet and opera fans, but my show just lost a tiny fraction of its viewers. I’m basically making things worse by even talking about it.”
It’s pretty amazing to think about the reach of this. A simple conversation between two famous actors was seen by over 8 million people worldwide! And Timothée Chalamet pointed out that if all his opera and ballet fans stopped following him, he’d only lose 14 cents in viewership. That’s a double blow! As Homer Simpson would say, it’s sad, but true.
Before you get upset, please let me explain. I don’t mean that nobody appreciates opera or ballet – Timothée Chalamet shouldn’t have said that either – but when you compare it to how much attention Hollywood celebrities get, the performing arts often feel like they’re forgotten. This is frustrating, and that’s why Chalamet’s comments were so upsetting to the dedicated, often underpaid, artists and fans who work in and love these art forms.
As someone who’s covered the arts for many years, I’ve lost count of how many people in opera, ballet, theater, and classical music have told me their art form needs to appeal to younger audiences. The fine arts have struggled for a long time with an aging fanbase, and have worked hard to find new and exciting ways to attract younger crowds and keep these art forms relevant.
Sports
Timothée Chalamet showcases impressive table tennis skills in ‘Marty Supreme.’ It’s hard to tell how much of his ability comes from actual practice and talent, and whether any computer-generated imagery was used to enhance the scenes.
These companies are also achieving great things. In Los Angeles, Yuval Sharon’s innovative opera company, the Industry, has sparked a new wave of opera and propelled Sharon to major success – he’s now debuting at a sold-out Metropolitan Opera. Meanwhile, Nederlands Dans Theater is challenging traditional ballet, while the Paris Opéra Ballet and New York City Ballet continue to be leading forces in the dance world.
Timothée Chalamet’s upbringing around ballet proved highly beneficial to his acting career. Both his mother and sister trained at the School of American Ballet, immersing him in the performing arts from a young age. Chalamet has demonstrated that successful acting requires not only emotional depth, but also a physically agile and expressive body.
Opera and ballet aren’t very popular in the United States, making them appeal to a small audience. Recent reports show that American opera and ballet companies sell between 1.4 and 3 million tickets annually. This is a stark contrast to the Academy Awards, which draw an average of 19 million viewers in just one evening – the same number of people who have strong opinions about Timothée Chalamet’s chances of winning (or losing).
It’s probably ironic that my opinion about Timothée Chalamet’s thoughts on opera and ballet will get more attention than all the actual opera and ballet articles I’ve written.
Again, please don’t launch that tomato. I’m not the one doing the clicking. You are.
