- The community has criticized the developers’ official apology and the way handling of the situation.
Cozy life simulation games are typically seen as relaxing and creative spaces where players can build, socialize, and de-stress. However, the new game Heartopia has sparked a difficult discussion within the gaming community, centering around issues of racism.
This game, once known for its welcoming atmosphere and enjoyable stories, is now facing criticism due to claims of racist content and concerns about how the developers respond to feedback. Let’s take a look at what happened and why players are so upset.
A cozy game that has been everything but cozy lately
Let’s start with what Heartopia is. It’s a multiplayer game where you can live a virtual life, exploring bright and cheerful worlds, designing and building your dream home, collecting adorable pets, and making friends with other players. If you enjoy cozy games like Animal Crossing, you’ll likely enjoy Heartopia too. You can find our full review here to learn even more.
Soon after its launch, Heartopia faced several problems, including arguments about content created by AI and difficulties with how the community was managed. But a new update brought a much bigger issue to light: racism within the game.
The quest that sparked the racism controversy
A recent issue involved a character named Kapil in the game. Players gave him a mushroom, and after he ate it, he started jumping and making noises that many felt sounded like monkey calls. This caused controversy, especially because Kapil was one of the few characters of color in the game.
I recently discovered a deeply offensive quest in the new Heartopia update. It involves giving a mushroom to one of the very few characters of color in the game, after which they begin jumping and making sounds like a monkey. I find this to be a clear example of racist imagery and am very upset by it.

The scene in the game quickly sparked outrage because of its historical connection to racist stereotypes that have long compared Black people and other groups to monkeys. Once the video circulated online, players flooded social media, calling the scene “blatant racism” and asking the game developers for an explanation.
The Developers’ response is a masterclass on what not to do when facing a controversy
Okay, so the devs actually did listen to us, which was a relief. They pulled the quest and the NPC causing all the drama super fast – like, within 24 hours! They also posted an apology on Discord, but honestly, it felt pretty weak. They tried to explain that the weird animation was supposed to show the character feeling dizzy and sick after eating a bad mushroom, but it didn’t really land with anyone.

Although some players were glad the problematic content was taken down quickly, others thought the apology didn’t go far enough. Many felt it didn’t clearly explain why the scene was offensive. Removing the content didn’t end the issue; instead, it sparked a larger conversation within the game’s community about how different groups are represented and how the game is moderated.
As expected, Heartopia has once again sparked community reactions and player complaints
Players on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) have expressed widespread frustration with how a recent issue was addressed. Many reported that their posts about racism or critical feedback were removed or silenced on official community forums. Several users said that messages addressing the problem were quickly deleted, and some were temporarily muted after speaking up.
Heartopia is the worst cozy game ever created in recent times.

I’ve been seeing a ton of upset players on X (formerly Twitter) about this, and honestly, some are even saying they’re deleting the game completely! It’s pretty intense.
I’m so done with Heartopia. Their use of AI was already a turn-off, but then they included a cutscene with a Black NPC making monkey sounds? Seriously, who developed this game?

To make matters worse, this isn’t Heartopia’s first scandal
In early 2026, players noticed the game was using AI to create some images and for translations. The developers admitted this was happening and said they would be more open about how they use AI going forward.
Heartopia admitted to using ai??

Even though AI tools weren’t used to create paid articles, the fact that this wasn’t initially revealed bothered many people. This, combined with a separate issue involving racist content, made existing concerns even worse.
Final Thoughts
Heartopia was originally created as a relaxing and friendly space for players to build, create, and connect with each other. However, recent issues have highlighted how even peaceful games can become involved in important conversations. The recent controversy about racism within the Heartopia community demonstrates just how quickly players react when they see a lack of diverse representation.
The game also emphasizes the need to listen to player feedback and own up to errors. More than just entertainment, games create shared spaces where millions connect. When these spaces are truly inclusive, they become incredibly impactful – something Heartopia is still working towards.
