Fans of the show Ted are racing through the new season, which recently became available on Peacock, but its creator, Seth MacFarlane, suggests they might want to pace themselves. He hints that these latest eight episodes could be the last, primarily due to financial considerations. The series centers on John, a teenage boy, and his crude, talking teddy bear, Ted, who constantly get them into trouble. While it’s a prequel to the Ted movies from 2012 and 2015, the show’s future is currently uncertain.
The creator of Family Guy recently discussed the high costs of producing a show that relies so heavily on computer-generated imagery in an interview with The Wrap.
Peacock and Universal repeatedly told me the show was very costly to make and couldn’t be done any cheaper. I understood that. So, I wrote a final scene with Max walking into a gym, suggesting he’d transform into Mark Wahlberg from the first ‘Ted’ movie. This put the showrunners, Brad Walsh, Paul Corrigan, and myself in a difficult position. While there’s always a way to make something work, it would likely require some complicated storytelling. As far as I know, there are currently no plans for a third season.
Peacock hasn’t officially announced whether the show will continue, but Seth MacFarlane has revealed the show’s fate hinges on financial considerations. He credits the dedicated team working on the series as the primary reason it’s lasted as long as it has.
Having already made two ‘Ted’ movies was incredibly helpful, because the amount of work each week felt impossible. It’s a real credit to our entire production team – especially our cinematographer Jeff Mygatt, the camera crew, the visual effects team led by Blair Clark, and everyone at Framestore in Melbourne – that we were able to pull it off consistently. The sheer volume of CGI needed – not just to create the bear, but to bring it to life as an actor – was like making a piece of an ‘Avengers’ movie every 22 minutes. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the experience we gained from making those earlier films a decade ago.
It’s understandable that making the third season is taking time, largely due to the show’s high production costs. A lot of special effects are needed to create the realistic appearance of the animated character. In fact, for Season 2, the creators even used artificial intelligence to perfect their depiction of Bill Clinton in one episode. As they explained, attempts at using prosthetics or traditional CGI just didn’t look convincing.
Viewers will likely be sad to see the live-action show end, especially since it’s been praised for its blend of silly humor and current events. However, a new animated series is coming to Peacock later this year. While the animation will probably have a smaller budget, much of the money will go towards bringing back the original cast. Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried are both confirmed to return, voicing their characters – an adult John and John’s lawyer-turned-girlfriend, who first appeared in Ted 2.

The Ted movies and series have stayed popular for over 14 years. The original film, released in 2012, was well-received by critics and earned over $549 million worldwide, despite costing only $65 million to make. While the 2015 sequel didn’t fare as well with critics (receiving a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and earned $215.8 million on a $68 million budget, the live-action series launched on Peacock in 2024 and quickly became a hit, earning positive reviews and sparking renewed interest in the Ted franchise.
