Okay, so the send-off for Sister Monica Joan on Call the Midwife was seriously moving! It wasn’t just amazing to see Sister Evangelina – Pam Ferris! – back on screen. But get this – Heidi Thomas, the creator of the show, actually appeared as one of the nuns helping Sister Monica Joan along! It was such a sweet, ‘end of an era’ moment in the season 15 finale, seeing her among the ghostly figures.
Thomas revealed he briefly appears as a nun when Monica Joan (played by Judy Parfitt) is escorted away. He originally had a larger role, but he decided to significantly reduce his screen time. However, he found that even spending a single day in the nun’s habit was a valuable experience.
Viewers flooded social media with positive reactions to the emotional scene depicting Sister Monica Joan’s final moments. Many praised the writers for a particularly touching moment when Sister Evangelina appeared, with one fan calling it ‘a beautiful and comforting moment’.

One viewer shared that they rarely cry during sad scenes, but were deeply moved when Sister Evangelina came for Sister Monica Joan, saying they already felt a sense of loss. Many others lauded Judy Parfitt’s exceptional performance.
Ferris returned from retirement to play the stern nun again, after leaving the show in season five when her character had a stroke and passed away.

The writer, Thomas, explained to Radio Times that she secretly approached Pam Ferris about appearing in the show while writing the script. She shared with producer Ann Tricklebank that if Ferris wasn’t interested, she would have altered the final episode to concentrate on other storylines.
“But the answer came back almost immediately: ‘I will do it for Judy’.”

Thomas remembered a touching moment with Parfitt shortly before she left the show. He said, “Judy was a fantastic actress, and she had a wonderful sense of humor, even while filming her deathbed scenes. She always wore bright, sparkly red toenail polish.”
Judy and I shared a quiet, touching moment in the rather rundown dressing room at Nonnatus House. She was wearing her nightgown, and I was in my nun’s habit, when she took my hand, her eyes welling up with tears. She told me that, to her, the baby felt like a real person. I agreed, telling her I felt the same way. It was a special moment for us both.

Although fans said goodbye to Judy Parfitt’s portrayal of the lively and mischievous Sister Monica Joan in the original series, the character will be back in a new prequel set during World War II, scheduled to premiere in December 2026.
