Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 4 Ending Explained: Who Attacked Leaphorn

Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from Dark Winds season 4, episode 4! Joe Leaphorn finds himself in a dangerous situation in the latest episode, and it’s unknown who attacked him. Following Billie Tsosie’s departure for Los Angeles in the previous episode, Leaphorn, Manuelito, and Chee went after her. This week’s episode largely focused on the characters’ unofficial search for Billie, and also featured a touching, albeit brief, reunion between Joe and his estranged wife, Emma.

This week’s episode of Dark Winds revealed more about Franka Potente’s character, Irene, but her secrets deepened as we discovered who she works for and saw her commit a murder on their orders. Meanwhile, Chee’s difficult undercover operation ended badly, and Leaphorn was ambushed. Every detail from this week’s episode warrants a closer examination.

Who Attacked Leaphorn At The End Of Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 4

The fourth episode of Dark Winds season 4 concluded with a shocking attack on Leaphorn. He was watching Sonny Bear Heart’s club when he spotted a camera and binoculars in a nearby building. As he went to check it out, he was suddenly ambushed. At this point, it’s still a mystery who attacked him, and the show hasn’t provided enough clues to know for sure.

It’s possible to guess who the attackers might be. They had a camera and binoculars, and were hiding in an abandoned building, suggesting they were also watching Sonny’s club, similar to Leaphorn. Considering Sonny’s connections to crime, this could mean the attackers are police officers who mistakenly targeted Leaphorn.

Okay, so I’m really leaning towards the law enforcement theory now. Especially with the news about Titus Welliver’s character being investigated by the FBI – it sounds like there’s a big trial coming up. It seems like Leroy Gorman is connected to both Sonny and Welliver’s guy, and I think that means the FBI might actually be investigating Sonny himself. Leaphorn, being the independent investigator he is, probably just stumbled into their case and caused some friction.

Chee’s Injuries Aren’t Real, His Ghost Sickness Is In His Mind

As a huge fan of the show, I was really intrigued by what happened with Chee at Sonny’s bar. Ever since the second episode, he’s been dealing with these strange visions and injuries that seemed connected to his ghost sickness. For a while, it was hard to tell if what he was experiencing was actually happening to him physically, or if it was all in his head. But this week’s episode made it pretty clear: the physical pain isn’t real. It’s all psychological – the ghost sickness is messing with his mind, not his body.

Chee was forced to take drugs and became violently ill, throwing up. While sick in the bathroom, he also suffered a bout of ghost sickness, causing him to cough up blood. However, when Bernadette checked on him, there was no blood to be found, only vomit. This suggests Chee’s experience with coughing up blood is a hallucination caused by the ghost sickness, and not a physical symptom.

Who Irene Is Working For In Dark Winds Season 4

Earlier in the episode, Dark Winds gave us more insight into Irene, the German assassin played by Franka Potente, and her interest in Leaphorn. We learned Irene is working for Dominic McNair, the character played by Titus Welliver. Irene visited McNair while he was in prison, and he scolded her for killing Albert Gorman and not finishing the job with Billie Tsosie. It’s now clear Irene is a hitwoman who carries out assignments as directed by McNair.

We don’t currently have much information about McNair, except that he’s in prison and has a trial coming up. He also suggested the FBI is heavily investigating Irene’s murder, and that they’ll be focusing on him. This leads us to believe McNair might be the leader of a larger criminal operation.

Irene’s Identity, Bunker & Gunther Explained

In the fourth episode of Dark Winds season 4, we learn more about Irene’s past. The episode reveals she and her father, Gunther Vaggan, are living in a hidden bunker. Gunther was shown wearing a Nazi uniform, suggesting they both escaped to America after World War II. Their secluded and concealed living situation implies they are likely living there illegally.

We’re not quite sure why Irene chooses to live in a bunker. While she needs to hide Gunther, a former Nazi, she could likely do so elsewhere. She was listening to a radio program about overpopulation and environmental collapse, suggesting she might be preparing for a catastrophic event. But for now, Irene’s reasons remain a puzzle.

It’s now apparent that Gunther is suffering from memory loss, probably dementia. This became clear when he shot at Irene, mistaking her for an intruder – he didn’t even recognize his own daughter. Meanwhile, Irene’s fixation on Leaphorn persists; she’s displayed a stolen photo of him on her mirror as if he were her romantic partner. It looks like Irene will continue to cause trouble for the investigation in Dark Winds.
