James Marsden, a well-known actor from the X-Men films, recently hinted at the possibility of different universes crossing over in the upcoming Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday. This film is set to have the largest cast of any Marvel movie ever, and its story will explore multiple universes – a concept that’s bigger in scope than anything seen in previous superhero films. Although specific plot details haven’t been officially revealed, the idea of multiple universes is a strong possibility for this highly anticipated sequel.
James Marsden, who plays Cyclops in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently discussed his return to the role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday with Variety. He mentioned the significant time that has passed since he last portrayed the character, suggesting fans will recognize and appreciate this comeback as something unique. Marsden also indicated that audiences are prepared for the scale of the movie and the potential for different storylines and characters to intersect, possibly revealing a key element of the film’s plot.
After about two decades, things have definitely changed. There’s a real excitement building – it feels like the world is ready for this movie and for these different stories to come together.
He also confessed he wasn’t certain he’d reprise his role as Cyclops, playfully suggesting Marvel might wait until he and the other actors are older before considering a return.
I used to think it might happen, but after ten, then twenty years went by, it started to feel like a distant dream. Maybe it just needed us to get older and more experienced to finally come together.
When Kevin Feige said the ‘worlds will collide,’ he meant that the X-Men and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would significantly connect in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s also a playful reference to the literal collisions happening within the movie itself.

The latest hints suggest that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie might feature colliding universes, similar to what we saw in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This event, known as an Incursion, involves universes crashing into each other, often leading to the destruction of one or both of them.
James Marsden famously played Cyclops (Scott Summers) in the original X-Men trilogy, appearing in all three films. He also made a brief appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. Recently, it was announced he’d be reprising the role in Doomsday, set to release in March 2025, and a new trailer offered fans their first look at his Cyclops in over ten years.
The next Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will be the fifth team-up film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and part of Phase 6. It will feature a massive cast of at least 29 stars from the MCU and classic Marvel stories, led by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The film will center around an epic battle between Doom and Earth’s heroes, including the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18th.
Incursions Incoming in Avengers: Doomsday?

Because the film brings together teams and characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and older Marvel movies, fans already know the story will involve multiple universes. Based on what director Matthew Marsden has said, it’s likely that these colliding worlds will be a major focus of the plot.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, viewers witnessed the devastating consequences of an Incursion. When Doctor Strange and Christine Palmer visited a universe where Strange had encountered another version of himself and guarded the Darkhold, they found it nearly destroyed. The sky was disappearing, and everything had lost its color, showing how an Incursion can erase an entire reality.
The recent Doomsday event suggests Doctor Doom’s actions could cause universes to collide, potentially leading to their destruction. We’ve already seen heroes from different universes interacting, and fans are speculating about which worlds are at risk.
Given Cyclops’ leadership role with the X-Men, it’s likely he understands the concept of Incursions better than most. This makes his part in the movie especially interesting to watch.
