Prime Video has some excellent sci-fi series, including popular shows like The Expanse, Fallout, Tales From the Loop, and The Man in the High Castle. However, one sci-fi show on the platform is surprisingly overlooked. Released in 2022, this original concept series, featuring well-known actors, deserves more attention. Sci-fi fans are always looking for fresh ideas, and this show delivers.
In the series Outer Range, Josh Brolin stars as Royal Abbott, a rancher dealing with the unsettling disappearance of his daughter-in-law. Things get even stranger when a strange, dark void appears on his land. The show also features Tom Pelphrey and Lewis Pullman as Royal’s sons, Perry and Rhett, with supporting roles played by Imogen Poots, Isabel Arraiza, and Tamara Podemski. Brian Watkins created the series and served as both executive producer and showrunner.
The Prime Video series Outer Range premiered in 2022 and ran for two seasons before being cancelled. Throughout its 15 episodes, the show was well-received by both critics and viewers, earning an overall score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans giving it a 77% rating. While the first season received a 79% critics’ score, the second season saw a significant increase in positive reviews, jumping to 92% from critics and 84% from the audience.
‘Outer Range’ Is Prime Video’s ‘Yellowstone’ With a Sci-Fi Twist
Science fiction stories generally fall into two categories. Some carefully explain their technology and build their worlds step-by-step, showing how characters use those advancements (like in The Expanse). Others throw you right into a mysterious world without much explanation, but are still completely captivating. Outer Range is a prime example of the latter.
Prime Video’s take on a Yellowstone-style drama quickly becomes a strange and captivating sci-fi mystery where appearances are deceiving. The plot throws constant twists and turns, creating a sprawling, complex puzzle centered around the Abbott ranch. It requires close attention, but despite the outlandish events, the characters feel real and their actions are driven by understandable motivations, making even the most unbelievable aspects surprisingly believable.
‘Outer Range’ Deserved Better From Prime Video

Prime Video
Prime Video had a really well-received sci-fi western show, Outer Range, starring Josh Brolin, who’s become even more popular in the sci-fi genre thanks to Dune. Despite positive reviews, the show was canceled after two seasons, disappointing fans who were hoping for a third. It’s a strong series, and its ending – leaving a major mystery unresolved – feels fitting for the show’s overall tone.
