As a huge fan, I’m still amazed by how much life the Spartacus world has! Even fifteen years after it first aired, people are still talking about it. And I was thrilled when, in 2025, they brought us a new spin-off series to expand the story.
Since its release on December 5th, Spartacus: House of Ashur quickly became popular on Starz, topping the streaming charts. Now, according to FlixPatrol, the series seems to be losing momentum, even before Starz has officially announced whether there will be a second season.
The first season concluded on February 6th after a run of ten seasons and initially remained popular. However, by February 8th – just over a month after the final episode – it had dropped to 10th place in the U.S. rankings. The historical drama continues to perform well internationally, currently ranking third on MGM+ in the UK and as the most popular title on PVOD in Indonesia. The series has also recently gained traction on streaming platforms.
Spartacus: House of Ashur Retcons the Flagship Series
As the title suggests, the show revived a major character who was previously killed off. In this new series, Nick E. Tarabay returns as his character, transported to a different timeline that essentially rewrites the story of Spartacus Season 2.
The latest installment reveals that it was Spartacus, not Ashur, who perished during the Mount Vesuvius events. After the conclusion of Spartacus: Vengeance, Ashur finds himself in a different reality, unexpectedly rewarded with ownership of the gladiator school he previously served – for killing Spartacus. The series then charts his journey to become a powerful “Dominus” in the violent world of Roman gladiators, aided by a strong female gladiator named Achillia.
Even years after the original series ended, Spartacus: House of Ashur maintained the same level of intense violence and action. Critics responded well, giving the first season a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though viewers were less enthusiastic with a score of 63%.
The disagreement between fans stems from differing opinions on the game’s theme. Some found the ‘Gladiatrix’ concept to be a misstep and criticized it, while others felt it was a natural fit for the series and enjoyed it just as much as previous installments.
Will Spartacus: House of Ashur Get Season 2?
Despite being a hit on Starz, Spartacus: House of Ashur hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season. However, the creator, Steven S. DeKnight, has stated that the writing for Season 2 is already complete, even without an official renewal.
He explained that success really hinges on how viewers react, but they’ve been pleased with the initial response and are prepared to move forward. DeKnight also thanked Starz and Lionsgate for their backing, and confirmed they never pressured him to reduce the show’s violence to suit current sensitivities.
He also hinted at future surprises in separate comments. He mentioned a lingering connection, explaining that the season finale included a nod to the original series. He revealed that Pompey, who appeared at the end of the original show, is currently a fugitive, and that people frequently ask about the potential appearance of Crassus, who is often referenced.
Before the series even began, creator Marco Ramirez told attendees at San Diego Comic-Con that they had planned for around five seasons. He explained that the show could actually last anywhere from four to seven seasons, depending on its popularity.
He hinted that more shows set in the same universe could be coming, saying he has “four or five spinoffs planned if the current show does well—and he’s confident it will.” He was right; House of Ashur proved to be a success, meaning Starz is likely to order a second season.
Spartacus: House of Ashur is available to stream on Starz.
