I mean, the gold chains weren’t just a look – he actually collected them, and other jewelry, from people who lost them during the fights that were always breaking out! It was like he was building the legend piece by piece, right there in that club. It’s amazing to think about now, isn’t it?
His breakout came with Rocky III and The A-Team, turning him into an international star.
Mr. T quickly became incredibly popular across many different media. He starred in motivational videos, worked with the D.A.R.E. program, released a rap album with positive messages, teamed up with Hulk Hogan in WWE, and made numerous appearances on talk shows.
As the 1980s gave way to the 1990s, the roles slowed.
After becoming a Christian, he began prioritizing work that matched his personal beliefs, and even declined an offer to return to his role on The A-Team.
Despite everything, he’s still been seen in the public eye. This year, he appeared in a Skechers commercial with football star Tony Romo, and he continues to make fun appearances in other projects.
In 1995, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma and faced a difficult personal struggle. True to his character, he found humor in the situation, pointing out the irony of the disease’s name.
Thankfully, he went into remission, but the experience only strengthened his resolve.
Despite ups and downs, Mr. T’s impact on pop culture remains undeniable.
He voiced a character in the 2009 film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2017, and remains a nostalgic figure associated with the 1980s.
He has three children with his former wife, Phyllis Clark. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he stopped wearing his famous gold chains and jewelry, a change he made due to his Christian faith.
