Disney’s live-action remakes are consistently successful for the studio, much like magic granting wishes. For example, the 2019 remake is popular again, now appearing on streaming charts seven years after its initial release.
I was surprised to see it, but Aladdin – the live-action version from a few years back – is really taking off on Disney+ right now! According to the folks at FlixPatrol, it’s currently the seventh most-watched movie on the platform here in the US. What’s even more interesting is that it’s the only live-action remake in Disney+’s top ten, which just proves how much people still love that story and how well that remake connected with audiences. It really seems like it’s earned its place as one of Disney’s biggest remake successes.
Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin is a vibrant fantasy musical. Will Smith, an Academy Award winner, plays the Genie, taking on a role famously made iconic by others. The film, released in 2019, also features Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari as the villain, Jafar.
When Aladdin came out in 2019, it sparked a lot of debate. Critics weren’t impressed, giving it a score of only 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences loved it, with a much higher approval rating of 94%. Even though reviews were mixed, the movie was a huge financial success, earning over $1 billion and becoming one of Disney’s most profitable live-action remakes.
Despite Disney recently canceling plans for a live-action Robin Hood and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the surprising streaming success of Aladdin shows continued interest in their remakes. Disney still has other live-action remakes in development, and a Lilo & Stitch sequel is planned for 2027.
Is Aladdin Still Getting a Sequel?
Following the huge success of the 2019 film Aladdin, Disney started thinking about how to continue the story. A sequel was announced in 2020, but hasn’t seen much progress since then. Although the original stars – Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith – were all anticipated to return, the project has stalled in recent years.
There were once plans for a prequel to Aladdin that would have delved into the history of the Genie. The movie, initially called Genies, would have shown that there were many more Genies and explained how Will Smith’s character came to be trapped in the lamp before meeting Aladdin. Unfortunately, Disney officially cancelled the project in 2021.
Even though the project has faced challenges, Disney hasn’t given up on a potential spinoff film based on a character from their recent live-action movie. Shortly after the film came out, they announced Billy Magnussen would reprise his role as Prince Anders in a new movie. While updates have been scarce since 2019, Magnussen has said he’s still on board. With the recent success of Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney might be more willing to explore spinoffs and prequels for its live-action remakes, but it’s still uncertain if any of these ideas will actually be made.
Despite initial controversy in 2019, the film Aladdin continues to be incredibly popular seven years after it first came out and is now considered by many to be one of the best live-action Disney remakes.
Aladdin is available to stream on Disney+.
