As a big fan of Yellowstone, I always felt like Season 2 was subtly setting things up for Kayce Dutton to potentially have his own show. Turns out, I was right! The new series, Marshals, basically follows the same path that Season 2 laid out in its very first episode. Even though Yellowstone wrapped up in 2024 after five seasons, I’m thrilled to see Luke Grimes back as Kayce, this time working with a team of US Marshals.
Kayce used to be a Navy SEAL and later followed in his father John Dutton’s footsteps to become Montana’s Livestock Commissioner. He’s repeatedly demonstrated his skill as a Marshal, despite some questionable things he’s done throughout the series Yellowstone. One scene, in particular, really highlights this complex character.
Yellowstone Season 2 Foreshadows Kayce’s First Marshals Case
The second season of Yellowstone ends with a crisis: Kayce’s son, Tate, has been kidnapped by Malcolm Beck and his brother. They’ve enlisted a local militia to take Tate from the Yellowstone Ranch, seeking revenge on John Dutton for refusing to support them in a dispute with Dan Jenkins and Gil Birmingham’s character.
Kayce discovers where the Montana Free Militia is hiding after a covert operation, leveraging John’s influence to pressure local sheriffs and catch Teal Beck off guard at his home. This information leads Kayce, John, livestock agents, and ranch hands to a cabin near the Crazy Mountains.
Kayce is leading the fight in the remote, countryside area. Rip distracts the militia by drawing their fire, allowing Kayce and his team to move in, with John Dutton playing a key part in their attack. Kayce and Mo carefully search the house, systematically clearing each room. However, Tate is nowhere to be found, causing concern.
John shoots Malcolm Beck in the back and wrist, then stays with him in a field. He persuades Malcolm to reveal Tate’s location. After Malcolm tells John that Tate is in Whitefish, Montana, John shows him kindness, allowing Malcolm to find some peace as he loses blood.
The sheriffs, with Kayce accompanying them, led the search for Tate with increased urgency as they arrived at the next location. They quickly entered the house, carefully checking each room, and eventually found John’s grandson safe and sound in the bathtub. This intense scene also gave viewers a glimpse into how Kayce would perform his duties as a marshal.
How Marshals’ Series Premiere Emulates Tate Dutton’s Rescue
The new series draws significant inspiration from a memorable scene in Yellowstone Season 2, mirroring its overall feel and narrative approach. Fans of Yellowstone might recognize how the Season 2 finale subtly hints at the core mission of Kayce in Marshals: bringing a kidnapped Native American child home to her family.
The first episode of Marshals features Kayce joining a team of U.S. Marshals to find Tiva and Lucy Kane, a mother and daughter from the Broken Rock Tribe who have been kidnapped. The abduction is part of a plan to force their father, Jim Kane, to help attack Thomas Rainwater.
Dutton is back at a secluded mountain cabin, continuing his aggressive search. When the marshals are caught off guard, Kayce finds himself under fire, and Cal kicks down a door. Similar to a scene from Kayce’s past in Yellowstone Season 2, the team systematically clears the house by firing shots to ensure their safety.
It reminded me of when they rescued Tate – the marshals moved in, and our team worked so hard to secure the house. We were taking fire as we pushed upstairs, just desperate to find the missing little girl. And like in Yellowstone, Kayce and his guys found Jim’s wife, Lucy, inside, but it turned out her daughter was already gone, taken somewhere else.
Kayce focuses on one of the shooters, who is already wounded and in custody, and aggressively questions him to find out where Tiva is being held. Similar to his father, John, Kayce uses intense force to get answers, even pressing the barrel of his rifle against the man’s gunshot wound until he reveals Tiva’s location.
Kayce ultimately locates Tiva and defeats her kidnapper, an event that echoes the storyline and structure of Tate’s rescue in Yellowstone. However, Marshals later reverses course, putting him back on active duty, reinforcing the idea that this role suits him well – just as it did in the original series.
