Anime adaptations in the 2000s often faced issues with slow storytelling, unnecessary side plots, and unresolved endings. Many popular manga series didn’t get the complete and satisfying conclusions fans deserved, even with dedicated followings. Today, studios are focusing on higher quality, well-written stories and visually stunning animation. This makes a reboot – carefully planned – a viable option to finally deliver a complete and faithful adaptation of these beloved manga.
Shows like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood demonstrate that carefully made remakes can revitalize classic series and attract new fans. Reimagining adaptations that didn’t fully succeed is often a safer bet with a greater potential payoff than starting completely new franchises. Several older action-adventure anime have compelling characters, meaningful themes, and exciting power systems, making them ideal candidates for high-quality remakes in the next few years.
Soul Eater Deserves a Faithful Adaptation With Atsushi Okubo’s Darker Manga Ending
Soul Eater became well-known for its unique art style, the idea of weapons being human-like partners, and its interesting take on witches. While Studio Bones initially did a great job bringing Atsushi Okubo’s manga to life, the anime took a different path starting with episode 37. This new direction resulted in an ending that felt less impactful and left out storylines from the manga. A reboot of Soul Eater could fix these issues by staying true to the original story’s tone and providing a satisfying conclusion without unnecessary additions.
I’m so excited that it’s almost been long enough to revisit Soul Eater! It’ll be 16 years since the original anime finished and 12 since the manga wrapped up. I truly believe Maka and Soul deserve a proper ending, one that really captures the complex themes of the Moon Arc. Now that Atsushi Okubo’s Fire Force is done, the timing feels absolutely perfect to give Soul Eater another adaptation – and this time, I’m hoping they’ll stick even closer to the source material!
Katekyo Hitman Reborn Deserves a Reboot Adapting The Mafia War Arcs
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! started as a funny, lighthearted series, but it unexpectedly evolved into a complex story about Mafia battles. However, the anime, which ran for 203 episodes, didn’t cover the entire manga. It stopped before showing how the main character, Tsuna Sawada, fully developed, skipping important storylines like the Inheritance Ceremony and The Curse of the Rainbow arcs, and ended in 2010. The manga continued beyond the anime, making the conflict over who would lead the Vongola family a large-scale war with lasting effects.
The most compelling parts of the story focus on Tsuna’s growth from someone who doesn’t want to lead, to a strong and determined leader – something the first anime didn’t fully capture, and why a new version is needed. Luckily, there’s already a complete plan for a reboot, so fans can be confident in getting more Katekyo Hitman Reborn! content. This new adaptation can really explore the manga’s important ideas about duty, friendship, and how traditions are passed down in the world of organized crime.
D Gray Man’s Next Anime Needs to Respect Katsura Hoshino’s Evolving Tone
Both the initial 103-episode series and the 13-episode sequel, Hallow, blend dark, gothic themes of demon exorcism with an exciting conspiracy storyline. However, earlier attempts to adapt D Gray Man into anime faced problems with inconsistent tone, gaps in production, and a story that felt rushed. This ultimately led TMS Entertainment to stop production in 2008 because they ran out of source material to work with.
The manga is still being published, even though it’s had several breaks, with the latest chapter, number 257, released in late January 2026. The anime only adapted the first 208 chapters, so there’s now enough content to justify a fresh start. Plus, D Gray Man continues to have a loyal following, making a well-made seasonal reboot a potentially profitable venture for an anime studio.
Air Gear Deserves a Remake That Honors the
The anime Air Gear, based on the popular manga series of the same name, was known for its exciting skating competitions and unique character art when it aired in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, Toei Animation cancelled the show in 2006, leaving the anime feeling incomplete and more like a preview of the manga rather than a full adaptation.
Despite not being hugely popular, Air Gear has a strong story with a lot of potential. The original manga has enough material for many episodes, and a well-made reboot by the right animation studio could easily turn it into a hit series.
Flame of Recca’s Darker Tournament Arcs Would Flourish With Modern Animation
During the late 1990s, Flame of Recca pioneered the style of tournament arcs focused on elemental powers, following Recca Hanabishi’s journey from a wild teenager to a skilled fighter who controlled eight different flame dragons. Unfortunately, the anime version toned down the series’ violence, simplified its complex themes, and stopped abruptly halfway through the Ura Buto Satsujin tournament, leaving out the final major story arc from the original manga.
The Flame of Recca manga has incredibly detailed weapon designs, but animation technology in the 1990s wasn’t advanced enough to bring them to life properly. With today’s animation and special effects, a remake could finally showcase the stunning elemental powers of the dragons from Flame of Recca and give the entire story the adaptation it deserves.
Zatch Bell!’s Next Anime Must Honor Makoto Raiku’s Emotional Storytelling
Zatch Bell! is an exciting series that combines strategic battles with magic, and features incredible character development for Zatch Bell and Kiyo Takamine. Sadly, the anime didn’t get to cover the most highly anticipated story arcs, Faudo and Clear Note.
As a huge fan, I was so excited when the manga continued as Zatch Bell! 2 in 2022, picking up after the original anime ended in 2006! With the sequel still being released, it feels like the perfect moment for a full Zatch Bell! reboot. I’m dreaming of a seasonal adaptation that tells the entire story properly – no rushed pacing or unnecessary filler. It would be amazing to introduce this incredible series to a whole new generation of fans!
The First Getbackers Anime Didn’t Commit to the Source Material
GetBackers is a series that blends urban fantasy and supernatural mysteries, focusing on retrieving lost possessions. While the core idea is straightforward, the main characters, Ban Mido and Ginji Amano, develop incredibly powerful, reality-altering abilities as the story progresses. Unfortunately, the anime adaptation shifted to self-contained episodes and largely ignored the complex backstory established in the manga after the first 26 episodes, filling the remainder with a combination of manga-based scenes and original content.
It’s really a shame about GetBackers. The story is genuinely compelling, tackling some surprisingly mature and even unsettling topics. The biggest problem, though, is the animation. It came out during a tough economic time in Japan, and it shows – the quality is all over the place, even if some scenes still look good. Considering how clean and detailed the manga’s artwork is, the anime feels like a missed opportunity, and I think a reboot could really do the story and visuals the justice they deserve.
Eyeshield 21 Fails to Fully Capture Yusuke Murata’s Explosive Art
Yusuke Murata’s amazing illustrations keep Eyeshield 21 popular, especially as we see Sena Kobayakawa grow from a shy student into an amazing athlete. However, the first Eyeshield 21 anime didn’t quite capture the excitement and fast-paced action of the manga’s American football games.
The Eyeshield 21 anime wasn’t always true to the original manga, sometimes adding unnecessary filler storylines. However, the creator, Yusuke Murata, recently released a new animated short, Brain x Brave, for the anime’s 21st anniversary in 2023, proving that both he and fans still cherish this beloved series. A fresh reboot of Eyeshield 21 with modern animation and updated visuals could finally place it among today’s top sports anime.
The Forgotten Rave Master Anime Deserves a Faithful Modern Remake
Even before Fairy Tail became popular, Hiro Mashima showed his talent for creating detailed and imaginative worlds with Rave Master. The original Rave Master anime ended prematurely, cutting short the story before it could reach its powerful and moving climax against Demon Card. A new adaptation of Rave Master would allow the story to deliver its full emotional impact.
Interestingly, the Rave Master manga is noticeably more serious in tone than Hiro Mashima’s later creations. The story follows Elie and the Rave Warriors as they confront dangerous challenges that truly test their strength and survival, and Mashima expertly blends themes of friendship with real loss and lasting consequences.
A YuYu Hakusho Remake Would Be the Biggest Shonen Anime Comeback in Years
During the 1990s, YuYu Hakusho was incredibly influential in establishing the battle tournament style found in many anime and manga. While the original anime adaptation by Studio Pierrot is still beloved, it sometimes struggles with uneven pacing. A new adaptation of YuYu Hakusho could build on the story’s strong emotional core and fully explore the complex characters created by Yoshihiro Togashi, as we follow Yusuke Urameshi’s journey from a rebellious youth to a powerful figure in the Spirit World.
I absolutely loved the original YuYu Hakusho anime, but honestly, I think a reboot with today’s animation technology could be incredible! And as a huge fan of the manga, I’d be over the moon if they adapted everything – no skipped storylines or side stories! It would be amazing to see those supporting characters get the attention they deserve, and I really think giving the final arc a bit more breathing room would help a whole new generation fall in love with YuYu Hakusho just like I did.
