Weekend Today host Michael Atkinson sparks backlash with menstruation remark on International Women’s Day – and you won’t believe his female co-star’s response

Michael Atkinson, a host on Weekend Today, is facing criticism online after making surprising remarks about periods during the show on Sunday.

The show’s host was talking with two guests about International Women’s Day, coming up on March 8th, when one of them mentioned their work to end ‘period poverty’ – the lack of access to menstrual products.

Gavin seemed uncomfortable and looked down when Louise talked about the topic, which led to Michael making some inappropriate comments.

Michael teased Gav, saying, ‘Hey, are you okay? It seems like you’re expressing what all guys are thinking with your gestures.’

We’re all a bit sensitive and easily upset. Honestly, we need to toughen up, especially since it’s particularly unpleasant dealing with things first thing in the morning.

But Michael’s co-host, Alison Piotrowski, wasn’t having any of that and playfully told him to move on.

Shocked viewers quickly took to social media to slam the presenter over his remarks.

Someone on social media questioned why the hosts of Today were joking about menstruation and the discomfort it causes some men, asking if anyone else found it strange.

Someone else agreed, saying it’s a common problem and periods are a natural part of life.

‘Literally International Women’s Day,’ a third chimed in.

Someone else pointed out that men often feel awkward discussing a normal and universal bodily function.

In February, Michael was announced as the new co-host of Weekend Today.

Channel Nine has announced that a father of three from Queensland will be the new co-host of the weekend edition of the popular breakfast show, alongside Alison Piotrowski.

He joins the team permanently after a summer stint on the desk.

Atkinson expressed her excitement and pride about joining the Today show, calling it a program that many Australians rely on during their weekends. Having grown up in regional Queensland, where weekends are centered around family, sports, and staying informed, she feels a strong connection to this new role.

I’ve always loved sports and how much it enhances our lives, so I’m thrilled to continue hosting rugby coverage on Stan Sport and enjoy live sporting events. I’m also excited to start my new job as a co-host on Weekend Today.

I feel fortunate to work with such talented and wonderful people like Ali, Lizzie, and Dan, and the amazing crew who work behind the scenes.

Piotrowski also welcomed his new coworker and expressed his excitement about collaborating with him.
