Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Scream 7! The newest installment, Scream 7, is packed with Easter eggs, and the most clever one appears right at the beginning. Like recent Scream movies, it features plenty of references and callbacks to earlier films in the series. Given the people involved, Scream 7 doesn’t hesitate to embrace nostalgia.
Alongside Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox reprising their roles as Gale Weathers, Matthew Lillard is also returning for Scream 7 as Stu Macher—or some version of him. He previously provided the voice for Ghostface in the Stab movie-within-a-movie featured in 2022’s Scream, and also voiced a tribute to director Wes Craven. Lillard originally appeared in an earlier Scream sequel, and that appearance is referenced at the beginning of the new film.
Stu’s Sighting At Windsor College Is Mentioned At The Start Of Scream 7
Following the tradition of the Scream franchise, Scream 7 starts with a thrilling opening kill. This time, the victims are Scott (Jimmy Tatro), a huge fan of the Stab movies, and his girlfriend, Madison (Michelle Randolph). They’re visiting the infamous Macher house, which is now a rental property. Even before they reach the house, there’s a notable reference to Stu, a killer from the original film.
As Scott and Madison drove toward the notorious house on Turner Lane, they listened to a radio report mentioning someone resembling Stu Macher being spotted at Windsor College back in 1997. The report was brief, but the entire opening scene, including Scott’s actions, heavily implies that Stu might still be alive.
The Easter egg at Windsor College is a playful nod to Matthew Lillard and his memorable, brief appearance in the movie Scream 2.
Stu Being At Windsor Is Actually A Meta Reference To Matthew Lillard’s Scream 2 Cameo
Although Stu Macher died in the first Scream movie, Matthew Lillard reappeared in Scream 2 in 1997, but not as Stu. During the party scene at Delta Lambda Zeta, he makes a quick, background appearance interacting with Timothy Olyphant’s character, Mickey.
The brief, unacknowledged appearance sparked fan theories that Stu was still alive in the Scream movies. However, it turned out Matthew Lillard wasn’t playing Stu at all – he was simply an extra at the party, disguised with bleached blonde hair.
In an interview with Ash Crossan for ScreenRant’s “Going Method” series, Damian Lillard shared the story behind his cameo in Scream 2. He revealed that it was actually director Wes Craven who came up with the idea. You can watch the clip from the interview here:
The newest Scream movie, Scream 7, playfully references a quick cameo Patrick Lillard made in Scream 2. The film also acknowledges the popular fan theory that Stu Macher survived, as Lillard’s 1997 appearance is often cited as ‘proof’ that Stu was still alive and secretly followed Sidney to Windsor in disguise.
How Stu’s Windsor Easter Egg Feeds Into Scream 7’s Biggest Mystery
I was so excited to see Matthew Lillard back as Stu in the latest Scream! The movie really plays with the idea that he somehow survived, and it’s brilliantly unsettling. Even before it came out, we knew Lillard would be involved, and throughout the film, a version of Stu haunts Sidney through these creepy video calls. Plus, Ethan Embry’s character, Marco, keeps pushing the idea that Stu was actually committed to a psychiatric hospital, which just adds to the suspense and makes you question everything!
The ending of Scream 7 reveals who’s been playing Ghostface – and it’s not Stu or anyone linked to him. Instead, Marco explains he used AI and deepfake technology to create a modern version of Stu. Although Scream 7 explored the possibility of bringing the original Stu back, theories about him still being alive will likely continue.
