After ten years of marriage and welcoming a son, Fergie and Josh Duhamel seemed poised to be a lasting success story in Hollywood.
The 50-year-old singer met her husband while working on his TV show, Las Vegas, and they married in 2007. They welcomed their son, Axl, six years after that.
Everything seemed ideal for ten years, but in 2017, they surprised everyone with the news of their divorce.
Josh Duhamel, 53, finalized his divorce two years ago and has since remarried. He and his wife, Audra Mari, 32, recently announced they are expecting another child – a baby girl – on Instagram, adding to their family which already includes a son.
Although Josh Duhamel and Fergie officially divorced six years ago, people are talking about their split again after Duhamel recently discussed it in an interview.
Sources are now revealing more details about the reasons for their unexpected split, specifically how disagreements about having more children ultimately led to the breakdown of their marriage.
According to a source, a major disagreement over having more children contributed to Josh and Fergie’s split. Josh desired to expand their family, but Fergie was happy with just one child.
He’s very outgoing and loves being around people, while Fergie is more introverted and quiet. They’re both genuinely kind and good people, but they simply had different visions for their future and how they wanted to grow their family.
Sources say Josh and Fergie are still friendly and supportive of each other. They have a good co-parenting relationship and genuinely respect each other as parents. Fergie agrees with all the positive things Josh recently shared publicly, confirming his statements were completely honest and heartfelt.
A source shared with the Daily Mail that the split wasn’t unexpected, as Fergie is used to being independent.
Fergie is a wonderful mother and successfully co-parents with her ex, and family is a high priority for her. However, she’s much happier and more fulfilled when she has the freedom to live life on her own terms.
It’s easy to see why she left the Black Eyed Peas. While she still has a good relationship with the group, she’s much happier and more fulfilled when she’s independent. She needs the freedom to pursue her own creative vision and doesn’t do well when she feels limited or stifled.
That might seem harsh, but she doesn’t mean it to be. She simply understands who she is as a person and a mother, and prioritizes her own wellbeing. That’s why her relationship with Josh didn’t last.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Fergie and Duhamel for comment.
Seeing Duhamel on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, where he discussed their split, reminded people about their marriage.
The Ransom Canyon athlete explained to Lauryn and Michael Bosstick that they simply see things differently, and that’s perfectly alright.
He reflected on the relationship, ‘We have a beautiful son.’
Duhamel spoke highly of his former partner, noting that while she and his current wife are quite different, he thinks both are wonderful women.
Surprisingly, he described Fergie as a very genuine person, particularly since she’s taken a break from public life.
‘She’s a great mom, very kind, very non-confrontational, thank God.’
He reports their co-parenting arrangement is going smoothly, describing a positive relationship with his ex and noting that his ex also gets along well with Audra.
In an October 2023 interview with Graham Bensinger on In Depth, Duhamel shared the reasons behind his divorce.
‘I think we kind of outgrew each other and had very different interests,’ he said at the time.
During our conversation, he shared that he’d come to terms with that chapter of his life. He and his ex-partner now have a good relationship, and they successfully co-parent their son. He emphasized that everything was positive and they enjoyed their time together.
The actor, known for ‘Shotgun Wedding,’ explained that as they got older, they increasingly felt the need to visit North Dakota. They clarified this trip wasn’t about a specific person, but expressed genuine goodwill, saying, ‘I have no bad feelings, and I’m very fortunate she’s a kind person.’
Originally from Minot, North Dakota, Duhamel explained why he prefers to avoid the typical Hollywood scene.
I never quite adjusted to everything that happened. It felt overwhelming, and I just longed to be myself again, to get back to a simpler time.
Honestly, red carpets and the whole Hollywood scene just aren’t my thing. I’ve always felt that lifestyle, especially out in LA, can really drain you if you’re not careful. It’s just not where I thrive, you know? It feels a bit… soul-crushing if you let it get to you.
Parts of the interview took place in Minnesota, where Duhamel owns a lakeside cabin.
The host shared that it took him a while to feel a sense of belonging. He explained that having this property lets him reconnect with his childhood passion for nature, creativity, and an active lifestyle.
He spoke fondly of his wife, explaining, “Audra and I have so much in common. We both grew up in North Dakota and are proud of it. We both cherish time at the lake, prioritize family, and love being around children.”
