After 83 Years, Batman Is Losing A Crucial Part Of His Lore

Okay, so most superheroes have some kind of home base, right? Like, a secret cave or even just a regular apartment. But honestly, I think Batman has the coolest one, hands down. It’s a total shame, though, because it looks like he’s going to lose it soon!

The next issue of Batman, #9, reveals that Batman will have to leave the Batcave and all his other secret bases throughout Gotham City.

Gotham’s police department is launching a massive attack on Batman and his allies! Following a secret agreement with Mayor Isley, Commissioner Vandal Savage has ordered a city-wide operation called “Operation Peregrine.” Savage’s tough TUCO squads are tasked with one goal: capture Batman. Batman and his team must dismantle their bases, protect their information, and evade the police… but not everyone will escape unharmed.

Currently, Gotham City is led by Mayor Pamela Isley, known as Poison Ivy, and Vandal Savage, who has taken over as police commissioner after Jim Gordon. These two villains, now in positions of power, are actively trying to expose the Bat-Family, forcing Bruce Wayne to sadly decide to shut down the vigilantes’ headquarters.

The Batcave has been a key part of Batman’s image since it first appeared in a 1943 radio show. The character itself was created in 1939 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Usually found under Wayne Manor, the Batcave has changed a lot over the years. For example, in the movie Batman Begins, it was shown as a hidden safe haven, similar to the Underground Railroad, and in the 2022 film The Batman, it wasn’t a natural cave at all, but an old, disused subway station.

As a huge Batman fan, it’s really sad to see him seemingly leaving the Batcave, especially in this version of the DC Universe. But honestly, it’s even tougher watching what’s happening to another member of the Bat-Family with this “Operation Peregrine” – they’re really the one taking the hit right now.

Batgirl Faces Jail Time In Her Upcoming Spin-Off

With issue #9, the iconic Batcave may be undergoing a significant change, potentially marking the end of a beloved period. Simultaneously, this issue will kick off a new chapter for Batgirl.

This comic issue will essentially test the waters for a spin-off series focusing on Barbara Gordon, the Gotham City vigilante. The new series, titled Barbara Gordon: Breakout, will be written by Mariko Tamaki, who previously created the graphic novel I am Not Starfire and has worked on comics for both DC and Marvel. Artist Amancay Nahuelpan, known for their work on Hawkgirl and Crush & Lobo, will provide the artwork.

This comic series picks up after the events of “Operation Peregrine,” focusing on Jim Gordon’s daughter as she navigates life in Supermax, a prison built for enemies of Vandal Savage. She’s been arrested as Barbara Gordon and charged with helping the Bat-Family, which allows her to keep her vigilante identity a secret.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout is one of the exciting new comics being released as part of a larger initiative from the publisher. Other highlights include the return of Batman: Shadow of the Bat, a new Batwoman series written by Greg Rucka with art by Dani, a fresh take on Lobo by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, and many other titles.

I’m so excited about the new Batgirl series! The title really hints that she’s finally going to break free and do her own thing, which is awesome. It also makes me wonder… could this mean we haven’t seen the last of her working out of the Batcave? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but I’m definitely hopeful!

The latest issue of Batman (#9) arrives in stores and online on May 6th, followed by the first issue of Barbara Gordon: Breakout on May 13th.
