Fans have been eagerly awaiting the fourth season of Ted Lasso, which comes as a surprise since the show was initially intended to run for only three seasons.
After the third season of the Apple TV comedy wrapped up with Jason Sudeikis’ character, Ted Lasso, going home and other characters having their stories resolved, it seemed the show was finished. This was especially true because the show’s creator and star indicated he wasn’t keen on continuing. He and his fellow creators – Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly – had originally planned for just three seasons, feeling they’d reached a satisfying ending.
With the return of Ted Lasso just a few months away, creator Bill Lawrence has explained the reason for a fourth season. Speaking with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley while promoting his HBO Max comedy Rooster, Lawrence acknowledged the current state of streaming TV, where he’s juggling three shows – Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, and Shrinking. He revealed he’ll be watching season 4 of the Apple TV+ comedy as a viewer, as Jack Burditt, Jason Sudeikis, many of the original writers, and members of his Doozer Productions team will be taking the lead on it.
He’s assured everyone that the new episodes are incredible, having previewed several of them. Regarding the show’s revival beyond its initial three-season plan, Lawrence compared it to the renewal of Shrinking for a fourth season. He explained that his creative teams always plan a complete story arc – a beginning, middle, and end – for each show. They originally envisioned Ted Lasso lasting three seasons, hoping audiences would enjoy it, and are now continuing the story based on positive reception.
Given how much everyone loves the cast and crew of the Apple TV sports comedy, it would have been foolish not to try and create another three-season storyline when the streaming service asked about it.
Bill Lawrence explained that Jason Sudeikis had a clear idea for the show’s direction, and while he doesn’t want to reveal future plot points, he believes the time jump is a key element that audiences appreciate. It allows the story to evolve beyond a simple continuation of ‘Ted Lasso’ – we see this with characters like Jamie Tartt now playing for a different team, Rooster.
Acknowledging that many feel the show shouldn’t have continued beyond its satisfying conclusion, Bill Lawrence explained that the initial three seasons of Ted Lasso will always hold a special place in viewers’ hearts. He likened it to the creative process in his writers’ rooms: once a joke lands and gets a laugh, that positive feeling remains even if someone later points out a flaw. Because of this, he’s confident fans will always remember their enjoyment of Ted Lasso, no matter how they feel about the fourth season.
Though its revival came relatively quickly, Ted Lasso isn’t the first show to return after seemingly ending—even without a formal finale. Many shows have done this, from nostalgic reboots like The Conners and iCarly, to more creative continuations like The Librarians: The Next Chapter and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Today’s TV landscape is full of examples of shows bringing back characters and telling new stories, even after what felt like a conclusive ending.
Though the third season of Ted Lasso focused on saying goodbye to its characters, it hinted at potential future storylines, even without Jason Sudeikis as the head coach. Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, decided to stay in London, marry Jane (who is expecting a baby), and continue coaching at AFC Richmond alongside Roy Kent and Nate. Plus, Keeley proposed the idea of starting a women’s team to Rebecca, and Rebecca was enthusiastic about it.
A recent comment from Lawrence suggests that Ted Lasso season 4 is the beginning of a new three-season story. This aligns with earlier statements from Warner Bros. Television CEO Channing Dungey, who said the show might continue past season 4, though she hadn’t yet heard detailed plans for future seasons. Writer Bill Goldstein also expressed a desire to continue the show as long as it remains creatively strong.
Considering the critical and audience success of its first three seasons, it’s highly likely Apple TV+ and WBTV will continue Ted Lasso. The creative team seems energized by the current fourth season, and reports suggest they’ve already developed plans for three more seasons. This would also allow the show to potentially bring back popular characters who aren’t appearing in season four, like Phil Dunster, who recently clarified his non-return to ScreenRant.
Ted Lasso season 4 begins streaming on Apple TV in August.
