Christian Bale gives his unexpected thoughts on the American Psycho remake

Christian Bale, known for his role as Patrick Bateman in the original American Psycho movie, recently commented on the new remake. Director Luca Guadagnino, famous for his work in Italian cinema, is planning to adapt Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel for a new film, as announced in October 2024.

I first saw this story come to life back in 2000. Mary Harron wrote and directed the adaptation, and Christian Bale absolutely nailed the role of the New York investment banker who was also a serial killer. It was a really memorable performance!

Considering it’s been almost thirty years since the last film, some people felt it was too early to revisit the character. However, Christian Bale surprisingly welcomes a new take on the role.

Anyone interested in revisiting the film is welcome to try, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. They shared fond memories of making the movie with Mary Harron years ago.

Honestly, it takes guts to tackle a project like this – I’m not even sure if it’s a remake or what exactly they’re going for. But good for them, I respect anyone who’s willing to take a risk like that. I’m rooting for them, whatever they’re doing!

Not much has been heard about the project since the first announcement in 2024. However, director Luca Guadagnino, known for films like Challengers and After the Hunt, confirmed in April that it’s still in development.

He shared at CinemaCon last year, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that they are passionately developing a new film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book he personally loves and which greatly influenced him.

Currently, Christian Bale is starring in The Bride, a new take on the classic 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which has sparked some debate among viewers.

In the new film, Bale plays the character of Frank, and Jessie Buckley, known for her role in Hamnet, stars as the main character. The movie’s cast also includes Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough.

The Bride! is in cinemas now.
