‘Bridgerton’s Most Insufferable Characters, Ranked

Please be aware that this article reveals plot details from Season 4 of Bridgerton. While Bridgerton features many charming characters, it also includes some truly irritating ones. The yearly social season in Mayfair is full of gossiping mothers, immature playboys, a queen who doesn’t seem to care, and at least one nobleman who is incredibly dull. Thankfully, characters like Eloise Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington provide some much-needed sanity amidst all the frustrating personalities.

Despite being incredibly frustrating at times, the flawed characters in Bridgerton are a big part of what makes the show so captivating. Characters like Sophie Baek are defined by their difficult relationships – think of her cruel stepmother! And Penelope faces constant dismissal from her mother and sisters. The men aren’t any better – some of the most popular suitors are downright awful. Here’s a ranking of Bridgerton’s most annoying characters, from those we can almost excuse to those we wish would just disappear.

10
Anthony Bridgerton

While Jonathan Bailey is certainly attractive, his character, Anthony Bridgerton, acts like an immature child. He’s stuck-up, self-important, and in Season 1, thinks he controls who his sister, Daphne, marries. In Season 2, he pursues Edwina Sharma while secretly being in love with her sister, Kate. It’s only through the influence of the women around him – Daphne, his mother Violet, and eventually Kate – that he slowly learns to grow up and become a more mature person.

Anthony’s return in Season 4, where he scolds his brother Benedict for falling for Sophie, highlights how frustrating he can be when he meddles in his siblings’ lives. However, he’s matured a lot since Season 1, and we’re happy to see him continue in future seasons, as long as he maintains the empathy he showed in the post-credits scene.

9
Simon Basset

Netflix

Simon Basset had a terrible childhood due to his difficult father, which explains his cold and withdrawn behavior when he arrives in Mayfair. He prefers to be alone with his thoughts rather than engaging with society, and many of his interactions with Daphne in the first season feel insincere. However, his biggest mistake is deceiving Daphne about his ability to have children. He can father a child, but chooses not to, because of a promise he made to his father before he died – a promise to never have an heir.

Daphne was consistently honest with Simon throughout the first season, making his deception particularly hurtful. His complete absence from Mayfair since then is hard to forgive, even considering Regé-Jean Page’s reasons for leaving the show. While Simon showed growth by the end of Season 1, acknowledging his past and accepting fatherhood, he won’t be welcomed back unless he stops manipulating Daphne.

8
Prudence and Philipa Featherington

Prudence and Philippa are always paired together, especially in Bridgerton, and their personalities are deliberately exaggerated to contrast with their sister, Penelope – almost to the point of being a parody. Prudence is unkind, and Philippa isn’t very bright, and both of them are solely focused on gaining the approval of men and their mother. Even after they get what they want, they don’t grow as characters. Instead, they’re given more screen time to be mean to Penelope, constantly putting her down for her weight and lack of romantic options. They can’t even manage to be happy for her when she finally gains confidence and transforms her style in Season 3, swapping her usual yellow for a bolder teal.

It’s only when Penelope reveals herself as Lady Whistledown that Prudence and Philipa finally begin to respect her intelligence, but this recognition feels overdue. It’s disappointing that it took such a dramatic reveal – one that could have ruined her reputation – for them to see her as their equal. Still, they did eventually show her respect, so they deserve some credit, even if they remain somewhat frustrating. Hopefully, marriage and becoming mothers will help them mature and grow.

7
Queen Charlotte

Netflix

Queen Charlotte is a truly formidable figure, perhaps even more so than Miranda Priestly. While she has understandable reasons for her behavior – years of caring for King George through his illness must have been difficult – it doesn’t excuse her constant dissatisfaction. Nothing seems to cheer her up, not even puppies, snuff, or impressive performers. The only thing that truly captures her attention is the latest gossip from Lady Whistledown’s pamphlets.

Queen Charlotte often seems to enjoy hearing gossip and learning about the problems of those she rules, which makes her appear unkind rather than fair. Even after years of friendship, she attempts to control Lady Danbury. Like some other characters, she’s focused on herself and still has a lot to learn, making her behavior frustrating but sometimes amusing. Thankfully, she shows a more human side and genuinely laughs in Season 4, saving her from being seen as completely unpleasant. Hopefully, she’ll develop some new interests before Season 5.

6
Lady Portia Featherington

Netflix

It’s easy to see why Penelope is revealed to be Lady Whistledown, considering how awful her mother is. Portia Featherington spends the early seasons of Bridgerton constantly scheming and causing trouble, making life miserable for Marina Thompson and largely ignoring Penelope along with her other daughters. She’s very controlling, treats everything like a business deal, and is determined to outdo the Bridgerton family, making her a major source of conflict for a while.

Lady Featherington initially treats Penelope poorly, but eventually begins to respect her for secretly running the successful Whistledown gossip sheet for three years. However, this change doesn’t last, and she disrespects her loyal maid, Varley, refusing to give her a raise and allowing her to leave. Similar to Queen Charlotte, Portia eventually shows some compassion and asks Varley to return, but her motives remain questionable.

5
Lord Debling

Netflix

It’s incredible how much of a downer Lord Debling was, especially considering he was only in three episodes of Bridgerton. He’s a character most viewers would happily never see again, and it’s a relief Penelope ended up with Colin instead. Beyond being emotionally distant and lacking personality, his views on life are simply unpleasant. He openly admits his dream is to travel while expecting his wife to manage the home, making him a cold and off-putting person. He perfectly represents why someone like Eloise Bridgerton wouldn’t want to get married. Hopefully, Lord Debling stays confined to Season 3!

4
Rosamund Li

Netflix

Let me tell you, every good fairytale – and Bridgerton definitely leans into fairytale territory – needs a truly awful stepsister, and Rosamund Li absolutely delivers. She’s a carbon copy of her mother – completely spoiled, rude, and utterly incapable of being happy for anyone else. Throughout Season 4, she doesn’t offer Sophie a single kind gesture. Instead, she just amplifies her mother’s unpleasantness, treating Sophie like she’s barely human. Honestly, Rosamund is so entitled and snobbish, the show did us a favor by limiting her appearances to just a few episodes. Maybe if she’d taken a page from her sister Posy’s book, Benedict Bridgerton might have actually noticed her. But, sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.

3
Lady Araminta Gun

Netflix

Portia Featherington can be annoying, but she has some good qualities. Araminta Gun, however, is purely unpleasant – she’s a classic wicked stepmother. She’s cold, calculating, and goes to extreme lengths, like lying to Sophie Baek about being left out of a will and even having her falsely imprisoned. While you could say she’s just protecting her daughters (especially Rosamund over Posy), she stole from Sophie for years, hoping to get away with it. She’s genuinely cruel, and this is a major obstacle for Sophie and Benedict as they try to build a relationship in Season 4.

Araminta has quickly become one of the most disliked characters in Bridgerton because of her difficult personality and generally unpleasant demeanor. Like other frustrating villains, her constant frowning and inability to be happy for others outside her family don’t help. Most viewers wouldn’t miss her if she didn’t return to the show. However, Katie Leung deserves praise for her excellent portrayal of the villainous Araminta.

2
Cressida Cowper

Netflix

Cressida Cowper is a consistently nasty villain on TV. She’s always either causing trouble for Penelope – like ruining her dresses – or being rude to women she sees as rivals. Most of the time, she’s scheming, betraying people, using blackmail, or simply lying to either find a husband or avoid a marriage she doesn’t want. In Season 3, she even pretends to be Lady Whistledown to escape an unwanted engagement and collect a reward from the Queen. She’ll do absolutely anything to get her way.

While learning about Cressida’s difficult upbringing does explain some of her behavior, she consistently prioritizes her own desires over the feelings of others. This, combined with her consistently unpleasant demeanor, is why viewers have little sympathy for her, even when she hosts extravagant balls that the Queen avoids. Although she seems to be improving in Season 4, she still has a long way to go to win back the audience’s favor.

1
Nigel Berbrooke

Netflix

Nigel Berbrooke is widely considered the most unpleasant character in Bridgerton. In Season 1, he relentlessly pursues Daphne Bridgerton, attempting to force her into marriage and even assaulting her when she refuses. Despite being physically confronted by both Daphne and Simon on two separate occasions, he continues his manipulative behavior, trying to arrange a marriage between Daphne and Anthony before Daphne can protest.

Throughout all of this, it’s revealed that Berbrooke has a child out of wedlock with one of his maids! He’s incredibly brazen, and his tendency to resort to violence against women makes him the most unlikeable man in society. It’s no surprise he quickly leaves Mayfair after Lady Whistledown exposes his scandalous behavior – after everything he did in Season 1, it’s doubtful anyone would want to associate with him.
