The upcoming animated series Maul – Shadow Lord, set to premiere on Disney+ in 2026, will explore a similar storyline to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but with a flipped perspective – focusing on the darker side of the conflict. While fans are excited about The Mandalorian & Grogu coming to theaters, many are also eagerly anticipating this new series. Maul – Shadow Lord will connect events between The Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story, and will introduce a fresh, central character to the Star Wars galaxy.
I’m so excited for Dave Filoni’s Maul – Shadow Lord! From the teaser and what we know about the show, it looks like we’ll finally see what happened to Maul after The Clone Wars. It seems he’s on the run from the Empire, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out!

The story appears to primarily focus on developing the connection between Darth Maul and a new character, Devon Izara, who is Force-sensitive and Maul is attempting to train as his apprentice.

The new trailer suggests Devon, widely speculated to become Darth Talon, will be introduced as a Jedi survivor of Order 66 – a traumatic event during the Clone Wars. It appears Darth Maul will attempt to corrupt her, pushing her towards the Dark Side, or at least away from the strict path of the Jedi and towards a more neutral stance.

Similar to how The Clone Wars explored the relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka, Maul – Shadow Lord will focus on Maul and Devon, with Maul taking on a mentor role to Devon. The story essentially mirrors The Clone Wars, but with the roles reversed.

Ultimately, The Clone Wars is best understood as Ahsoka’s story. While Anakin was a significant figure in both the series and her life, the show primarily focused on Ahsoka’s journey—her development as a Jedi and her eventual decision to leave the Jedi Order. Many episodes centered on the relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka and how it shaped her path.
It looks like Shadow Lord will follow a similar path to The Clone Wars, with Maul attempting to train Devon as his apprentice. However, the new story might also show even more parallels between the characters of Ahsoka and Devon.
Devon’s Maul – Shadow Lord Story Could Mirror Ahsoka’s Clone Wars Journey

Throughout The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano trained alongside Anakin Skywalker for several years. Just as she appeared poised to advance within the Jedi Order, she was falsely accused of a crime and expelled. Though the Jedi later offered her reinstatement, Ahsoka chose to distance herself and rejected their ways.
Devon’s story in Maul – Shadow Lord might follow a path very similar to others we’ve seen. While Lucasfilm hasn’t said if the show was intended to run for many seasons, it will probably have at least two or three, just like The Bad Batch and The Clone Wars.
If that happens, Devon’s story could develop gradually, similar to how Ahsoka’s did. The first season of this Clone Wars follow-up might focus on Maul constantly trying to recruit Devon, and she could eventually join him towards the end of the season or in the finale.
In Season 2, Devon might begin training with Maul, gradually turning to the dark side. This could lead to a conflict between them in Season 3, ultimately causing Devon to strike out on her own.
If this occurred, it would closely resemble Ahsoka Tano’s development in The Clone Wars, and it would logically fit. Since Maul doesn’t refer to Devon in Solo or Star Wars Rebels, and she’s never shown in official Star Wars stories, something must have caused them to become estranged.
Because Maul never mentions Devon, their breakup will probably be unpleasant. It’s hard to say exactly what will cause them to split, but perhaps Devon becomes too consumed by darkness, or maybe Devon eventually betrays Maul.
