Stephen Hibbert, the writer and actor famous for his unsettling role as The Gimp in the movie Pulp Fiction, has passed away at 68.
A family member confirmed to TMZ that Hibbert passed away from a heart attack in Denver on Monday.
His children – Ronnie, Rosalind and Greg – shared a heartfelt statement following his sudden death.
Stephen Hibbert, their father, passed away suddenly this week, according to a statement. He was a loving and dedicated family man who was passionate about the arts, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Hibbert, originally from Fleetwood, England, started his television writing career in the 1980s, with some of his first jobs being on David Letterman’s Late Night show.
He went on to write for a number of animated shows for kids in the 1990s, and also wrote scripts for programs like MADtv and Boy Meets World.
He also penned the 1994 comedy It’s Pat: The Movie, starring SNL vet Julia Sweeney.
He truly became a pop-culture icon thanks to his short, yet memorable, role in Quentin Tarantino’s famous film, Pulp Fiction.
During a well-known scene in the movie, the character played by Hibbert appears after the pawn shop owner tells someone to bring out a person dressed as a ‘Gimp’.
A strange figure appeared, having seemingly escaped from a locked box. They were completely covered in a black leather outfit, like a bondage suit, complete with a zippered mask and a leash.
He’s responsible for watching over boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) as Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), a powerful crime boss, is taken into a different room.
Throughout the scene, the chained character remains silent. When Butch breaks free, he attempts to warn others, but is immediately knocked unconscious with one punch.
The disturbing moment became one of the most shocking scenes in Pulp Fiction.
