I’m getting really excited for the return of The Mandalorian and Grogu! The new trailer gave us a glimpse of the Hutt Twins – those villains we met in The Book of Boba Fett – and it looks like they’ll be major players. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t seem like Boba Fett himself will be joining the adventure. Temuera Morrison, who played him, recently told Inverse that his character is essentially benched, and it sounds like The Book of Boba Fett not landing with audiences is the reason. It’s a bit of a bummer, but hopefully, Din and Grogu will more than make up for it!
It’s disappointing for fans of Boba Fett, as he was once central to Disney’s plans for Star Wars movies. With The Mandalorian and Grogu being the first Star Wars film in seven years, Din Djarin has clearly become the new focus of the franchise. The decision to move away from Boba Fett wasn’t a simple oversight; it reflects a change in Disney’s strategy and suggests where the Star Wars brand is headed.
Boba Fett Nearly Starred in One of Disney’s Earliest Star Wars Projects
After Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, CEO Bob Iger revealed plans for standalone Star Wars stories in addition to the main sequel films. Fans immediately wondered which characters could get their own movies, and Boba Fett quickly became a popular choice. He was instantly recognizable thanks to his cool look and imposing character in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, but he wasn’t a heavily developed character, leaving lots of potential for new stories.
A Boba Fett movie was actually being developed at the same time as Rogue One and Solo, but fans didn’t find out about it for a while. Josh Trank was originally set to direct, with Simon Kinberg writing the script, but Trank later left and James Mangold took over. Ultimately, Disney decided in 2019 to cancel the Boba Fett film, along with other planned spin-off movies, to concentrate on creating series for its streaming service.
Boba Fett finally got his own Disney+ series in 2021, but by that point, a new issue had arisen. The release of The Mandalorian in 2019 had already given fans the kind of bounty hunter story they’d been hoping for from a Boba Fett spin-off, as the main character, Din, shared many similarities with Boba. The Mandalorian became a huge hit, largely thanks to Grogu, initially known as Baby Yoda, and its success made it difficult for a Boba Fett series to stand out on its own.
Rather than simply retell the story of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett took a different approach. It showed Boba Fett developing a sense of morality and attempting to become a kind-hearted crime boss, hoping to reform the criminal underworld of Tatooine. While the show had some enjoyable scenes, it didn’t quite satisfy fans, who felt this version of Boba Fett didn’t match the cold, dangerous mercenary they knew from the movies.
Din Djarin is Star Wars’ New Leading Mandalorian
Since his show finished in 2022, Boba Fett hasn’t been seen in any live-action Star Wars projects, and there are no current plans for him to appear in any. While he might be in The Mandalorian season 4, which is intended to tie up loose ends from the Disney+ series, Din Djarin is likely to be the main focus.
Even though Hollywood relies heavily on nostalgia, Disney seems more focused on building a successful streaming service than on its past films. While the new film connects to the Star Wars saga, its director hasn’t shown he can attract large audiences like the characters Din and Grogu from The Mandalorian have. If the movie performs as well as the series, Din and Grogu will likely return for more films to keep the franchise thriving in theaters.
Following some divisive Star Wars releases, Disney is hoping for a guaranteed hit, and focusing on established characters seems like a smart move. Unfortunately, this means a beloved classic Star Wars character has been overshadowed by a newer hero who now serves a similar purpose.
Boba Fett could make a comeback if a writer really connects with the character. We’ve seen this happen before – no one expected Cassian Andor, a supporting character in Rogue One, to lead his own successful series years later. But right now, Din Djarin has firmly established himself as the main Mandalorian bounty hunter, and all the focus is on him and his young companion.
