As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always loved Pixar’s knack for hitting you right in the feels, even when the premise seems totally silly and aimed at kids. They’ve mastered the art of wrapping really emotional stories in bright, colorful packages. And it feels like their latest film, Hoppers, is really leaning into that strength – finally delivering the emotional punch we’ve come to expect, even with a wonderfully quirky concept.
Pixar has had a mixed track record lately, with films like Elio and Lightyear not performing as well as hoped. However, the anticipated success of Hoppers shows that Pixar still excels when it focuses on the elements that originally made it so popular.
Pixar’s Structure Waned Before Hoppers
Pixar films, like Up and Coco, connected with audiences because they explored relatable themes with beautiful animation. Even movies with seemingly specific premises, such as The Incredibles, were really about universal experiences like family and growing older. Pixar successfully appealed to a wide range of viewers by focusing on timeless ideas, ensuring that impressive visuals always served the story, rather than being the main point.
This is a beautiful and captivating film, rich with music and cultural detail, that tells a moving story about family, loss, and the enduring power of memory. Sadly, the studio later shifted its focus, and these creative strengths weren’t sustained.
Lightyear was created as a spin-off from the Toy Story films, telling the story of the movie Andy enjoyed as a child. While it was an entertaining sci-fi adventure, it didn’t quite capture the heart and emotional depth that Pixar is known for. It focused on impressive visuals and action, but didn’t offer a particularly meaningful or thought-provoking story compared to other Pixar films.
However, Hoppers offers a more meaningful experience, reminding us of what made Pixar special while still being enjoyable. Its success, boosted by positive feedback, proves that Hoppers wasn’t just a lucky break – it confirms Pixar’s original strengths were always there.
Hoppers Promises a Film Going Back to Pixar’s Roots
Many popular movies aren’t successful because of flashy visuals or big laughs, but because they start with a clever and enjoyable concept and then use it to explore more meaningful themes. The success of Hoppers demonstrates this approach is working and is a welcome development for the studio.
It feels odd to talk about a ‘Classic Pixar‘ period since many of us grew up with their films, but like Disney, Pixar has naturally had its peaks and valleys. Luckily, Hoppers seems to be a return to the studio’s roots, prioritizing a compelling story over flashy effects. Similar to Ratatouille – the story of a rat who dreams of being a chef – Hoppers follows a girl who, with the mind of a beaver, discovers the wonders of the animal world.
Unlike films that explore vast jungles or deserts, Hoppers focuses on the wilderness closer to home. It’s a fresh approach for audiences, and while it avoids the heavy philosophical themes of Soul, it aims for a powerful emotional impact through simplicity. This is a hallmark of Pixar’s most beloved films, like WALL-E, and Hoppers seems poised to become another classic. Hopefully, it signals a new direction for the studio, with films like Gato potentially ushering in a period of creative storytelling and artistic innovation.
