If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, consider Quartet on Prime Video – it won’t be available for much longer. This British drama, released in 2012, tells the story of a retirement home where talented musicians and opera singers spend their later years at Beecham House.
Dustin Hoffman made his directorial debut with Quartet, a film based on Ronald Harwood’s popular West End play. The movie boasts a stellar cast featuring Maggie Smith, Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, and Pauline Collins.
Paste Magazine highly recommended Quartet, calling it a beautifully crafted film comparable to the operas featured within it, and predicting audiences would want to see it again immediately.

When Quartet came out, Digital Spy called it a warm and comforting movie, highlighting especially strong acting from Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly. They noted Smith perfectly used her signature sharp look as Jean, and Connolly’s portrayal of Wilf was also exceptional.
Sheridan Smith described the film set as “really spontaneous and magical,” telling Digital Spy that the cast often improvised and had fun when they weren’t filming. She said it was especially exciting to work alongside such talented actors.
Honestly, being on set felt amazing – so much of the movie is actually just real moments and genuine laughter. Everything felt super spontaneous and magical, and the director really managed to capture that feeling in the final cut. It’s awesome!
