Concerns are growing in the U.S. about Tencent’s significant influence on the global gaming market. White House officials are reportedly considering whether the Chinese company should be allowed to maintain its large investments in game companies both in America and around the world.
The Financial Times reports that White House officials are discussing whether investments by Tencent could create security concerns. These discussions are happening as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare to meet in April.
So, I’ve been following this whole thing with Tencent, and it turns out the US government has been looking into them for a while now. It started during the Biden administration, and basically, they were worried that Tencent’s ownership in different game companies could give them access to a ton of personal info from American players like me. It’s a pretty serious investigation, and it’s been going on for a long time.
Due to its large user base, some officials have expressed concern that Tencent could potentially gather intelligence. However, as of now, there’s no public proof that player data has been misused, and no official decisions have been made regarding this possibility.
If the US moves forward with the plan as it’s currently understood, the situation will likely change significantly.
Tencent’s reach in gaming runs deep, and you simply can’t push aside a major player
If you follow gaming at all, you’re likely aware of Tencent’s huge influence. They completely own Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, and are a major shareholder in Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine.
As a gamer, it’s pretty wild to think about how much influence one company has! Tencent, for example, bought out Supercell – the guys behind Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars – back in 2016 for a massive $8.6 billion, and they still own the vast majority of the company. But it doesn’t stop there! They’ve also invested in a ton of other studios I love, like Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed!), Remedy Entertainment, Paradox Interactive, Techland, and even Krafton, the team behind PUBG. It’s a huge web of connections!
It’s not just about how much money they’re putting in, either. They’ve got a really smart deal going with Roblox, and they actually own a piece of the company that runs Roblox in China. Roblox still has the bigger share there – they own 51% – but this partnership feels like a big move for them, and it’s interesting to see how it plays out.
Tencent is a major investor in game development studios globally, and they often buy ownership in these companies. If the U.S. government makes them sell those investments, it could significantly alter how game studios receive funding.
This situation disproportionately impacts smaller game development teams that rely on funding from overseas investors. It could become harder for independent developers to get their projects off the ground financially. Larger publishing companies may become even more dominant, and smaller studios could face difficulties finding the resources they need.
Companies such as Apple and Google get a significant amount of their app store income from games, and Tencent often invests in those games. Therefore, any substantial developments concerning Tencent could impact the entire mobile gaming industry, which would likely be a negative outcome.
