The first episode of Taylor Sheridan’s new show, Marshals – a spinoff focusing on Kayce Dutton and a procedural drama for CBS – reveals what happened to Monica Long-Dutton, explaining why actress Kelsey Asbille isn’t returning. While Luke Grimes is back as his popular Dutton character, the premiere clarifies that Monica has died, which is why Asbille isn’t part of the cast.
The new series was announced after the fifth season of Yellowstone finished airing. It’s a first for the Yellowstone universe – this show follows a case-of-the-week format and is the first to be shown on a major television network. The heartbreaking events surrounding Monica have been central to the story, explaining Kayce’s desire for a fresh start.
What Happened to Yellowstone’s Monica Long-Dutton in Marshals’ Premiere?
Viewers of Yellowstone predicted Monica’s death would occur early in the season, and the premiere episode begins to reveal why. The episode opens with Kayce having a disturbing flashback to his time as a Navy SEAL. The scene culminates with John Dutton receiving a phone call from Monica, immediately followed by an explosion that throws him back.
A recent dream seems to predict a difficult event for Monica and suggests what’s to come for Kayce. Later, Kayce tells his son, Tate, that Monica is no longer present, and acknowledges she had strengths he didn’t, confirming her absence and a major change in their family.
During a rally at a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation, Kayce learns, through a conversation with his new colleague Andrea Cruz and tribal member Dust Cloud, that several people on the reservation have died from cancer. The scene subtly suggests that Monica also died from the same illness.
Kayce leaves the ranch and goes to the mining protest to check on Tate. When John Dutton finds his son in the crowd, he tells him to come home. However, Jamie points out that Tate should be there to support their mother, and suggests Kayce should be actively helping instead of reprimanding his son.
When Tate turns away and holds up a picture of Monica, it strongly suggests she has passed away, likely due to cancer, just like many others in the tribal community. This is confirmed at the rally as Tate, now a deputy marshal, encounters Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty, making it clear Monica is no longer with Kayce.
The tribal chairman points out to Kayce that he hasn’t seen him on the reservation since Monica’s funeral. Kayce mentions he still visits her burial site at East Camp, subtly confirming her death to the viewers. Later, Marshals reveals that toxins illegally dumped on the reservation are responsible for the higher number of cancer cases, and that this relates to the death of Jim Kane’s brother.
What Monica’s Death Means for Kayce’s Story in Marshals
Monica’s death deeply impacts the story of Marshals and is crucial for Kayce’s journey of change and new beginnings. John Dutton explicitly acknowledges this when he visits her gravesite in the first episode, right before Kayce shoots a wolf and signals a turning point for his character with a decisive action.
Monica’s death will have a profound effect on the show, noticeably influencing her husband’s path and connections. Without her loss, Kayce probably wouldn’t have felt the drive to become a marshal and pursue justice for the Broken Rock Tribe. Ultimately, Kayce moves away from violence, and the show explores how his new role as a marshal brings him back to it.
Though Kayce tried to leave violence behind to protect his family, a recent event reignited his fighting spirit. He now sees himself as someone who defends others, not simply inflicts harm – a perspective sparked by something Mo said when John Dutton visited Rainwater in the hospital. When tragedy struck despite his efforts, Kayce instinctively fought to do what he believed was right.
Now that Monica has passed away, the focus shifts to the relationship between Kayce and Tate. John Dutton Sr. finds himself having the same difficult conversations with his son that his own father once had with him. However, this storyline unfortunately follows a pattern seen throughout Sheridan’s shows, where violence against women is used to drive the plot forward for the male characters.
