Hilary Duff talks Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift comparisons with her new music as she insists ‘I was here first’

Hilary Duff recently discussed feeling compared to other singers like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, jokingly pointing out that she’s more experienced and started her career earlier.

After a decade-long break from releasing albums, former Disney star, 38, is back with her new record, Luck… or Something. Her last album, Breathe In. Breathe Out, came out in 2015.

She first became well-known as the star of the show Lizzie McGuire. She then launched her music career in 2002, and her second album, Metamorphosis, reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart in 2003.

Hilary Duff recently discussed her upcoming tour – her first in 18 years – on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware. She also talked about producing her new album alongside her husband, musician Matthew Koma.

The couple have three daughters – Banks, age seven, Mae, age four, and one-year-old Townes. The singer also has a 13-year-old son, Luca, from her previous marriage to retired hockey player Mike Comrie.

Jessie shared that the album reminded her of music by Taylor, 36, and Sabrina, 26, and noted it felt significant because those artists probably listened to Hilary’s music when they were growing up, bringing things ‘full circle’.

She mentioned noticing influences from artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina in the music, though she admitted she could be mistaken.

It suddenly hit me – of course they were all listening to him! He was a huge part of their upbringing, so seeing him back felt like everything had come full circle. It just made perfect sense, and honestly, it was really special to witness.

Okay, so she almost said yes, but then she got all shy! She was like, ‘Ugh, yeah… but it’s just SO hard for me to talk about other amazing women in music and try to, like, rank them or something.’ Honestly, it’s adorable how much she cares about being respectful, but I just want her to gush about how incredible she is!

She pointed out how quickly things spread online – one minute something is new, and the next it’s being called ‘old news.’ She described this online reaction as harsh and surprising.

It’s like, I was here before you and I’m the more experienced one! Plus, there’s enough room for all of us.

Hilary noted that most songs borrow from earlier music, explaining that true originality is rare these days.

She explained that the key is to simply go to the studio and create music you genuinely love – the kind of music you’d enjoy listening to alone in the car with the windows down.

This album is exactly what I set out to create, and it’s definitely pop music. Pop is thriving right now, and a lot of it draws inspiration from existing songs and sounds.

She also said she was flattered by comparisons to Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, noting they’ve both been working in music much longer, while she’d been on a break for almost eleven years.

She actually took it as a compliment, explaining that these women seem to have dedicated more time to their careers than she has. She mentioned she took time off to focus on her family.

In a recent podcast, Hilary Duff opened up about her past, specifically expressing sadness over the breakdown of her family relationships. She mentioned regretting the distance that grew between her and her sister, Haylie, and her father, Robert, following their public falling out.

The two sisters used to be very close and collaborated on projects like the 2006 film Material Girls, a teen comedy loosely based on Sense and Sensibility. However, they haven’t been seen together in public since 2019.

Adding to speculation that they’re having trouble, 41-year-old Haylie recently shared a popular article on social media about Ashley Tisdale leaving a ‘toxic mom group.’ This group is rumored to include Hilary, Mandy Moore, and Meghan Trainor.

She recently explained her relationship with her father, telling Rolling Stone that they sometimes talk and sometimes don’t. Despite generally being optimistic, she acknowledged that she’s been through a lot of difficult times, which she accepts as part of life.

When asked if she’d change anything about her life, Hilary admitted there would be a lot she’d do differently.

Dealing with difficult family issues and the breakdown of my family has been the hardest thing, and it’s what I’d most want to change.

She continued, saying she’s had a wonderful life and feels incredibly fortunate. She’s especially grateful to return home to the fantastic family she’s built, and she’d gladly endure any hardship to protect that.

Hilary Duff recently revealed how a disagreement with her sister, Haylie, inspired her new song, “We Don’t Talk.” In the song, she expresses confusion about what caused the rift, admitting she doesn’t know when or why they stopped speaking, and mourns the loss of their close relationship.

Although she didn’t explain what caused the sisters to grow apart, the song’s words hint at a difficult and hurtful experience.

Hilary, the more well-known sister, sings about offering everything she has – even half of it – if jealousy is the reason for someone’s unhappiness.

You know, as someone who helps people navigate relationships all the time, I’m a huge believer in really talking things through. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how important it is to connect with the people you care about, and honestly, just listen to each other. I’ve been wanting to have an open conversation, a real heart-to-heart, and get back to that easy connection we used to have. It’s exhausting being stuck in sadness over a lack of communication, and I’m really ready to break down those walls and finally address what’s been going on.

After the release of “When We Don’t Talk,” many people guessed the song was about Haylie, and Hilary has now confirmed it is, telling CBS Mornings, “It’s definitely about my sister.”

She shared that the hardest part of her life right now is being estranged from her sister. She hesitated to talk about it publicly, but ultimately decided to because it’s a genuine part of her experience.

She hesitated to include the song, but decided to do so because it reflected her personal experiences.

Hilary noted how strange it feels to be alone when so many others are also experiencing life without a partner.

She admitted she wasn’t certain the song would fix things with Haylie, and wasn’t even sure Haylie would listen or how she’d respond. She also felt it was a very personal part of her life that was now being shared publicly.

The actress from ‘How I Met Your Father’ explained she wasn’t trying to be negative, she was simply sharing what happened to her personally, and that’s all she wanted to say about it.

The mother of four also shares about her strained relationship with her father, Robert. She hasn’t spoken to him and previously attempted to gain his acceptance through her song, “The Optimist.”

The song features a particularly striking line: ‘I wish I could sleep on planes and that my father truly loved me.’

Hilary Duff’s parents, Robert and Susan Duff, separated in 2008, twenty years after they got married and four years after her popular show, Lizzie McGuire, ended.

Okay, so I’ve been following this case, and it’s a really good example of why following court orders is so important. This man, Robert, ended up spending ten days in jail – in Texas, no less! – because he went ahead and sold some family property without getting permission from the court first. Basically, a judge had already told him not to do that – it was part of a legal order, an injunction – and he ignored it. That’s considered contempt of court, and it comes with consequences. It’s a costly mistake, both financially and in terms of his freedom, and a reminder to always work with the legal process.

He admitted on Inside Edition that he had been unfaithful to his wife and deeply regretted the impact it had on their daughters.
