Ubisoft Quietly Confirms Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Remake Is Real

For months, there have been whispers about a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, but Ubisoft hadn’t confirmed anything – until now. A domain registration for a title called Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced surfaced in January 2026, leading many to believe an announcement was coming soon. While rumors of a delay put those hopes on hold, Ubisoft has finally, in a way, acknowledged the game’s existence.

Ubisoft recently shared concept art of Edward Kenway, the main character from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, in a blog post discussing the future of the Assassin’s Creed series. The image included the title and logo for a remake, subtly acknowledging rumors that have been circulating. Ubisoft playfully referenced the series’ famous motto, “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted,” but then hinted that these rumors might actually have some truth to them, encouraging fans to stay tuned for more information.

Ubisoft Confirms AC4 Remake Is Called Black Flag Resynced

This suggests a full reveal of the game is planned for later. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is just one of multiple Assassin’s Creed projects currently being developed, each at a different stage. Ubisoft hasn’t shared many details, but an internal leak indicated the game’s release has been pushed back to sometime between April 2026 and March 2027. Earlier reports had hinted at a release date earlier in 2024.

Since Ubisoft didn’t cancel the Black Flag remake during their recent cuts, it likely just needed more development time. Black Flag is a beloved game in the series and could benefit from significant upgrades. Originally released for older consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360, it was quickly updated for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Assassin’s Creed Has Many Games Coming Up

It’s nice to finally have confirmation that the Black Flag remake is indeed real, but it’s more or less a footnote in the franchise’s upcoming slate. Ubisoft’s blog post revealed that post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows is winding down, before turning its attention to other in-development projects. Here’s a quick rundown of what Ubisoft touches on and where each game is in development:

  • Codename Hexe: mainline entry rumored to involve witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire, principal development being done by Ubisoft Montreal.
  • Codename Invictus: “a PvP multiplayer Assassin’s Creed experience” from the developers of For Honor; Ubisoft calls it “a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise,” meaning it won’t emulate the multiplayer modes of Brotherhood et al.
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity will receive a 60fps patch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 5.

We’ve only seen a small part of the many Assassin’s Creed games currently being worked on. Rumors last year suggested nine AC games were in development, including a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Ubisoft isn’t sharing much information, offering only a brief announcement that Black Flag Resynced is coming. While the reveal was low-key, a larger announcement is expected in the future.
