Christina Applegate has revealed a deeply personal and painful experience from her youth: she had an abortion as a teenager while in a relationship with someone who was abusive.
Let me tell you, I just finished reading a really powerful memoir, and it’s stuck with me. The actress opens up about a huge moment in her life – finding out she was pregnant at just 19. It’s incredibly brave of her to share such a personal story, and it really offers a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of her early years.
She revealed she became pregnant in late April 1991. While she wishes she could forget the experience, she says it’s all documented in her diary, and revisiting those memories is still incredibly painful, according to People magazine.
The actress, known for her role in Dead to Me, decided to use actual entries from her teenage diaries instead of trying to analyze or rewrite her difficult experiences.
In a diary entry from 1991, she admitted to feeling overwhelmed with emotion while processing the unexpected news of her pregnancy.
She said she’d always believed she would have an abortion if she became pregnant at a time that wasn’t right. She also confessed she was confused about her relationship, admitting it wasn’t healthy.
She added, ‘Sometimes I don’t think it’s worth it.’
In her book, Applegate describes a long-term relationship where she says she suffered years of physical and emotional abuse. She alleges this man controlled aspects of her life, including her clothing and diet.
The actress recalled how her mother begged her to ‘get the f*** away from him.’
She shared that her relationship, which was already struggling, quickly worsened after she found out she was pregnant. She wrote in her diary that things took a very difficult and painful turn almost immediately.
It was in the aftermath of that upheaval that she made the decision to terminate the pregnancy.
She wrote online that she was pregnant and planned to end her pregnancy on Thursday, and was also asking for places to recover afterward.
Okay, so this is… complicated. I did something awful. I ended someone’s life – a person connected to a family who would be horrified if they knew it was me, all because they’re against abortion. But I just… I can’t have this baby. My life is… it’s about my work, about giving people something to distract them, to entertain them. And honestly? I don’t think I could have done anything else. Not now. It’s just… I couldn’t.
The actress, who is now a mother to 15-year-old Sadie, later shared openly about the physical and emotional recovery process in another honest post.
She said she was doing ‘okay’, though admitted to feeling ‘kind of woozy’.
“I don’t have a moment to process what’s happening,” Applegate continued. “And honestly, that’s probably for the best right now.”
This candid confession comes after more details emerged in her memoir about the intense scrutiny she faced regarding her looks while starring on Married… with Children.
The actress who played Kelly Bundy on the show revealed she was hardly eating when the series was most popular.
She openly talks about her experiences with body dysmorphia and anorexia, sharing that these issues became worse as her on-screen persona developed into the bold, rebellious teenage character fans saw.
She admitted she struggled with her weight while playing the character, explaining that the clothes she envisioned for the role required her to be very thin. This pressure unfortunately worsened her eating disorder. She felt trapped, needing to maintain an extremely lean physique to fit the character’s wardrobe.
The show aired from 1987 to 1997, covering a significant part of her adolescence and young adulthood. She’s now revealed she did whatever it took to stay thin during that time, and once described herself as dangerously underweight – ‘just skin and bones.’
If I were going to indulge in something really large, like a bagel, I’d hollow it out and probably only eat half – or even a quarter of it. That would be all the food I’d consume for the whole day.
I used to be very hard on myself and would sometimes stop eating completely. I became extremely thin—a size 0—and the costume designers on ‘Married… With Children’ constantly had to alter my clothes because I was losing so much weight. I was just skin and bones, really.
She admits she never felt comfortable with how her costumes became increasingly revealing over time. She often arrived on set wearing bikinis, but felt self-conscious when the audience reacted to her outfits.
By the fifth season, it was incredible – I remember walking onto the set for the episode ‘The Godfather’ wearing a leather jacket with fringes over a red shirt, and the audience actually stopped filming for five seconds while they cheered so loudly.
Looking back, I’m embarrassed by it. The show was definitely over-the-top and inappropriate, and it’s safe to say it wouldn’t be approved by today’s standards.
‘That’s a good thing: It’s hard enough for young women to thrive in a world of appearances.’
Although it was difficult, she wants to make it clear that she doesn’t blame the actors or filmmakers for the impact the role had on her mental well-being.
I knew being on the show meant I’d be seen as someone for men to look at, but I really wanted to get to wear Kelly Bundy’s outfits.
It might be difficult to accept now, but I truly didn’t realize how I was impacting others. I was young and didn’t understand that my unhealthy relationship with food stemmed from past trauma.
This memoir comes as Applegate is dealing with a particularly challenging period in her life. She recently shared that her multiple sclerosis is worsening and now largely limits her to bed.
As someone who follows health and wellness closely, I’ve been so impressed by this actress. She bravely shared her multiple sclerosis diagnosis back in 2021, and since then, she’s been incredibly open about what living with MS really feels like – both the physical challenges and the emotional ones. It’s refreshing and inspiring to see such honesty!
