According to FlixPatrol, the movie Deepwater Horizon quickly became popular on Netflix, landing at number 6 on the Top 10 Movies list in the U.S. on March 3rd, shortly after being added. It stayed at number 6 the next day, but it’s unclear if it will move up further, as newer movies are also performing well—in fact, they currently hold four of the top ten spots. This streaming success is notable because the film didn’t do well in theaters ten years ago, even though critics liked it and it received two Academy Award nominations.
Deepwater Horizon Sees Mark Wahlberg Fighting for Survival
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, trapping Mark Wahlberg’s character, Mike Williams, and his fellow workers. The explosion caused a huge fire, killing some crew members and forcing the survivors to band together and fight for their lives amidst the resulting chaos.
The movie Deepwater Horizon is based on an article called ‘Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours’ that first appeared in The New York Times. It was written by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul. The film features Mark Wahlberg, along with John Malkovich, known for In the Line of Fire; Gina Rodriguez, from Jane the Virgin; Dylan O’Brien, who starred in Maze Runner; and Kate Hudson, famous for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
Critics and audiences both responded well to Deepwater Horizon, even years after its release. It currently has an 82% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from 265 critics and over 25,000 fans, who often describe it as a tense and compelling action thriller.
Deepwater Horizon Was a Box-Office Bomb Despite Critical Acclaim
Despite receiving positive reviews and earning awards – including Oscar nominations for Sound Editing and Visual Effects, and a BAFTA for Best Sound – the film Deepwater Horizon ultimately lost money for the studio. While it earned $121.8 million worldwide, its high production cost of $110 million meant it didn’t even recoup its expenses. Estimates suggest the film lost between $60 and $112 million.
Despite initially losing money, the film Deepwater Horizon is now gaining popularity with streaming audiences. This hasn’t hindered Mark Wahlberg’s career either; the following year, he appeared in a hugely successful movie that earned over $180 million at the box office.
Mark Wahlberg recently appeared in The Family Plan 2, which was released on Apple TV in 2025 alongside Michelle Monaghan. He’s currently finishing work on three films: the action comedy Balls Up with Paul Walter Hauser, the historical crime thriller By Any Means about a hitman, and the sports comedy/drama Weekend Warriors.
