After over a year since the last season ended, fans of Outlander can rejoice! The eighth and final season of the popular time-travel drama is now available on MGM+, and the first three episodes suggest it was worth the long wait.
Okay, so if you’ve been waiting for new Outlander like I have, you probably remember how season six ended – with a seriously huge cliffhanger! Jamie and Claire found out that little Fanny, the girl they were taking care of, knew a song that shouldn’t even exist for another hundred years. It’s the same song Claire sang when her baby, Faith, died way back in season two. So, when Fanny said her mom used to sing it, Claire immediately started wondering… could Faith actually be alive, and is Fanny her daughter? It totally blew my mind!
The new season quickly deals with a major plot twist – thankfully, the writers didn’t prolong it – and then follows Claire and Jamie as they leave the American Revolution and return to their home at Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina.

Along the way, many characters reconnect, and a major issue from last season is quickly resolved.
Season seven felt disjointed because the characters and storylines were all over the place, even jumping between different time periods. This meant the show often interrupted a good story to focus on a less interesting one, making it hard to stay fully engaged.

Okay, so the dual timelines used to be amazing. Remember season one? Frank trying to find Claire in the 40s while we saw Claire falling for Jamie in the 1700s? It worked so well! But honestly, season seven just threw way too much at us. Jamie and Claire were dealing with the Revolutionary War, Brianna was fighting sexism in the 80s, and then Roger was bouncing around in the 1730s with his ancestor Buck trying to find their kidnapped son. It was just… a lot. As Claire would probably say, “Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ!”
As the new season begins, most of the characters are now living in the same time period – 1779. We’ll happily see the return of Lauren Lyle and César Domboy as Marsali and Fergus, who were only briefly mentioned last season. Jamie’s nephew Ian and his wife Rachel are also settling into their new life as a married couple, and Lord John Grey, along with his adopted son William, represent the British perspective.
The cast now includes Kieran Bew, known for his role in House of the Dragon, as Charles Cunningham, a new character who lives on the Ridge and might become a problem down the line. However, the story still primarily revolves around Jamie and Claire, who have been the central and passionate focus of the show since it premiered in 2014.

This couple’s epic love story has lasted for centuries and taken them across the globe, through incredible dangers like fires, wars, and even accusations of witchcraft. As the show’s final ten episodes begin, viewers are hoping for a joyful resolution for the deeply committed pair, brilliantly played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. The first episode also features a shocking twist that introduces a serious threat for the final season and is considered one of the series’ best surprises yet.
Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander novels, is still working on the last book in the series. Because of this, the show’s ending won’t be known until May.
Based on the early episodes, the new season promises to be just as gripping, complex, and heartwarming as the show’s most beloved seasons. Fans of the Fraser and Mackenzie families can likely expect an emotional and fulfilling ending.
As a huge Outlander fan, I’m so excited to share that you can currently stream seasons 1 through 7 on MGM+. And the best part? Season 8 is finally here, with new episodes dropping every Saturday starting March 7th!
