HARRY STYLES: Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally (Erskine/Columbia)
Verdict: Harry hits the dancefloor
Four stars.
Last September, Harry Styles ran the Berlin marathon in an amazing two hours and fifty-nine minutes. This demonstrates impressive endurance, much like his successful pop career, which began as a young contestant on The X Factor in 2010.
Harry Styles’ album, Harry’s House, was a big success at the 2023 BRIT Awards, where he won all four of the awards he was up for.
Harry’s House received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, solidifying Harry Styles’s position as a rare British singer with worldwide success.
The 32-year-old singer from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, hopes to build on his success with the release of his fourth solo album, ‘Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,’ which is due out on Friday.
Similar to George Michael and Robbie Williams, the singer who used to be in One Direction is now working to establish himself as a respected artist outside of the group.
Harry Styles combined R&B and soft-rock on his album Harry’s House. Now, he’s taking a unique approach to dance music, which is reflected in the album title’s hint of ‘disco, occasionally’.
If you’re hoping for high-energy dance music, this might not be what you expect. While there are a few dance tracks, like the new single ‘Aperture’ and ‘Dance No More,’ they aren’t typical rave anthems.
Overall, the album’s twelve new tracks create a smooth and gentle atmosphere with rich sound and soft vocals. The mood is delicate and understated.
Harry Styles created his album Harry’s House with his frequent collaborators Kid Harpoon, a musician who started out as a solo artist in London’s indie music scene, and Tyler Johnson, a talented American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
The album includes a large, sweeping orchestral piece arranged by Jules Buckley, and three songs with vocal contributions from Ellie Rowsell of the band Wolf Alice.
The album begins with “Aperture,” the song Harry Styles performed at the BRIT Awards. It starts with a steady, electronic beat that creates a calm, yet energetic, vibe – perfect for dancing.
He sings about a feeling of togetherness and enjoying a night of dancing, a sentiment he echoes in his album, Are You Listening Yet?, where he suggests that any worthwhile cause should include dancing.
So much for the disco. What about the kissing?
Harry has a romantic side, and it really shines through on songs like the gentle ballad ‘American Girls,’ where he encourages taking a chance on love (’cause time will show that you should try it, those American girls you spend your life with’). Another example is ‘Coming Up Roses,’ a sweet and loving song that sounds like it could easily fit into the style of One Direction.
Songs with contributions from Rowsell, like “Aperture,” give the album more energy. Plus, the lead singer of Wolf Alice joins Styles on the electro-pop track “Taste Back,” which is about the ups and downs of dating.
Season 2 Weight Loss is more of a fully-fledged duet. ‘Do you? Do you love me now?’ asks Harry.
I’ve been following his career for years, and these new songs really show a different side of him. He seems to be questioning where he fits in the industry now. In ‘Pop,’ he sings about feeling vulnerable and almost… stripped bare, like he’s just putting on a show. And ‘Paint By Numbers’ is amazing – it’s like he’s trying to figure out how to be a grown-up artist while still acknowledging his roots as a boy band member. It’s a really honest and thoughtful turn for him.
He sings about how it’s difficult when an image gets stuck in your mind, making things complicated.
However, the introspective mood doesn’t extend much further. Harry primarily wants to get people moving. He ends the album, ‘Carla’s Song,’ much like he began it—with energetic, driving electronic rhythms.
He’s going to be everywhere this summer, especially with his massive world tour and an incredible 12 nights performing at Wembley Stadium.
Out on Friday.
