Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, one of Australia’s most popular radio hosts, is urgently meeting with her team at her home after unexpectedly ending her highly successful $100 million deal with KIIS FM.
Henderson ended her 20-year radio career this week following a public on-air argument with her co-host, Kyle Sandilands. He criticized her interest in astrology, claiming it was affecting her job performance.
She was very upset with Sandilands, and became so emotional that she left the studio crying. She never appeared on the popular breakfast show again.
Henderson’s exit from the program was officially announced in a stock market update on Tuesday. The announcement stated that she is no longer able to work with Kyle Sandilands.
Just hours before the surprising news was made public on Tuesday afternoon, Henderson was spotted leaving a sound healing session in Newtown. She briefly told the Daily Mail she was doing well before returning to her $10 million home in Clovelly.
Since disappearing from the public eye, the radio personality recently received a long visit from her manager and close friend, Gemma O’Neill. O’Neill arrived in a black BMW and parked it beside a Range Rover belonging to Henderson.
Just then, the doors to her balcony slid open, and the scent of incense filled the air, easily overpowering the smell of a garbage truck going by – a truck that seemed to symbolize the end of her $100 million broadcasting contract.
O’Neill answered the door to pick up a food delivery from The Char Rotisserie – one of several deliveries that day. Others included a dog walker bringing Henderson’s dog, Sadie, and an Amazon driver who had trouble with Henderson’s gate.
I’ve known Michael O’Neill for years, and he’s a constant in Henderson’s life – truly a long-time friend. He’s always surrounded by a great group of people too, including personalities like Pip Edwards, the founder of P.E Nation. They’re a really supportive bunch!
In her memoir, Jackie O: The Whole Truth, radio personality Jackie Henderson shared that it was actor Ryan O’Neill who first urged her to get help for her struggles with painkiller and alcohol addiction.
Henderson admitted in 2024 that she may not be here today if it wasn’t for O’Neill.
‘I believe she saved my life, I actually do,’ Henderson said.
‘And I think we all need a friend like that.’
The pair have since been spotted heading to Athens and Berlin together for a working holiday.
When the Daily Mail asked Henderson about her disagreement with Sandilands on Tuesday, she declined to comment.
‘I can’t really say anything on that front at this point. I’m sorry,’ she said.
When asked if she had talked to Sandilands after leaving the show in tears, she seemed startled, quickly got into her car, and drove off.
Following the incident on February 20th, sources say Henderson and Sandilands only communicated through text messages, ARN management, or their agents, O’Neill and Bruno Bouchet.
Insiders at ARN suggest the end of the Kyle and Jackie O Show might actually be a positive development for the network, rather than a disaster.
Since the show’s income is decreasing and its contracts with Henderson and Sandilands are unusually expensive—leading some to believe it’s not making a profit—a source inside the company suggested ARN might be deliberately planning to cancel it as a cost-saving measure.
From where I’m standing, ARN has been facing some serious headwinds for a while now. It really boils down to two things: they overspent on acquisitions, and the boycotts in Melbourne significantly impacted their revenue. Honestly, those issues have been building for about two years, and it’s unfortunately led to a pretty difficult situation for them.
He’s an older, somewhat irritable man who acts much younger on the radio, and she’s become very interested in things like astrology and holistic healing. They’ve gradually drifted apart because of their different interests.
This is a huge success for ARN, and it likely means the end of Hamish McLennan’s time as chair, as he was the one who approved the agreement.
On Tuesday night’s Game Changers podcast, radio experts Irene Hulme and Craig Bruce suggested that Sarah Henderson might return to 2Day FM around 2027.
Hulme also said she believed Sandilands ‘had grounds to’ take ARN to court over his suspension.
The disagreement between Henderson and Sandilands started when Henderson discussed Prince Andrew’s astrology chart on air following his arrest. This led Sandilands to criticize her strong interest in astrology, claiming it made her difficult to work with.
Prior to Tuesday’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Sandilands mentioned on his radio show that Henderson would eventually return to broadcasting, though he didn’t say when that might be.
He explained to newsreader Brooklyn Ross that he needed to approve a statement from his colleague, hinting at some positive developments.
‘I did get some good news though yesterday,’ he said.
As a dedicated supporter, I’m always asked to approve anything officially connected to me, and yesterday that meant reviewing and giving the okay to a statement released by Jackie’s team. It’s just part of making sure everything aligns with what I believe in.
It’s great to hear Jackie plans to return at some point. That’s a really positive sign, and it sounds like she definitely wants to come back, which is wonderful.
The fact that he expected her to return that morning suggests Henderson likely made the decision to leave just a few hours afterwards. It’s plausible he decided to end their $100 million deal while she was having a sound healing session with Cordony.
Okay, so her deal with ARN is officially done, which is heartbreaking, but… get this! They’ve apparently offered her another show! Can you believe it? They clearly see how amazing she is and want to keep her on the network. I’m cautiously optimistic, but honestly, anything to see more of her on TV is a win in my book!
Sandilands, meanwhile, effectively has two weeks to fight for his job.
He has been suspended and given 14 days to ‘remedy’ the breach, or else faces termination.
ARN sent a written notice to Sandilands, informing him that his actions on the February 20th show were a serious violation of his contract with Quasar Media, as outlined in ARN’s agreement.
According to sources, all KJO employees except Ross were instructed not to report to the office on Wednesday and found out about the ASX announcement just moments before it was made public.
Last Wednesday, Sandilands admitted he wished he had handled things differently with Henderson.
I clearly bothered her. Looking back, I probably shouldn’t have said that while we were live on the radio. But we often say things without thinking when we’re on the air here.
I didn’t intend to upset her, but clearly I did, and I feel bad about that. Nobody wants to cause pain, especially to someone they care about.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen, but the show is continuing as planned. I’ve left the decisions about it to the management team.
Sandilands explained he simply wants to return to broadcasting with everyone feeling good about the situation. He expressed a desire for everyone involved to be happy and enjoy the process, including himself.
He playfully said he’d replace anyone on the production team without hesitation if it meant getting his co-star instead, not worrying about anyone else’s feelings.
In 2023, Sandilands and Henderson made a historic agreement with ARN, worth $200 million over ten years – making it the largest media deal ever seen in Australia.
However, Henderson recently began saying she would be willing to walk away if she wasn’t happy.
According to sources who spoke with Mediaweek, Henderson’s departure from the show was expected and a result of her recognizing her value after years of an imbalanced working relationship.
According to a recent article in the Mail, industry expert Rob McKnight suggests that Henderson’s new company, Besties – which focuses on events for women – is an attempt to create a brand identity distinct from her partner Kyle Sandilands’ often controversial public persona.
After that business failed, she found herself in a vulnerable position at work. Being publicly dismissed as out of touch was the final blow, according to McKnight.
According to McKnight, she explained to Kyle Sandilands – someone she cares for and admires, but whose on-air approach has limited her – that she would never respond to him in kind. McKnight believed she was right to feel that way.
‘They can fight, even get personal, but ultimately there is a line.
She takes great pride in her work on the show, and no one had ever doubted her dedication. So, being told she wasn’t focused on reality was incredibly upsetting.
Amanda Goff wrote about how Henderson and Sandilands were leading very different personal lives. Sandilands was enjoying a quiet, settled life at home, while Henderson, recently divorced, was thriving among a popular social group in the eastern suburbs.
Their vastly separate paths, Goff argued, laid the groundwork for their on-air rift.
‘I doubt star signs are the only issue here. Kyle’s frustration is obvious, given how openly and publicly he dismisses her passion,’ she wrote.
‘Come on, this isn’t really about Mercury in retrograde, is it?
This story explores how two people who used to be very close have grown apart, now living completely separate lives.
