The reinvention of Jim Carrey: As actor baffles fans with his ‘unrecognisable’ appearance how star’s career was derailed by questions over his ex’s suicide, a string of failed relationships and anti-vaccine beliefs

He used to be a massive Hollywood star, ruling the movie world throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Jim Carrey surprised fans with his appearance on the red carpet at the 51st César Awards on Friday night.

Although he received a lifetime achievement award, many people focused on his changed appearance, with some commenting that he appeared to have had cosmetic surgery, noting his face looked swollen and puffy.

Jim Carrey is famous for many successful comedies like Ace Ventura, The Mask, Man on the Moon, The Truman Show, and Bruce Almighty, but his life outside of movies has been more challenging.

Lately, I’ve noticed a shift with this celebrity – they’ve definitely stepped back from public life. It seems after some pretty intense scandals and controversies, they’re choosing to prioritize privacy and a lower profile, which honestly, I think is a smart move for them right now.

The death of his girlfriend, Cathriona White, deeply affected the actor, especially after private details of their relationship became public. These included notes where she claimed he exposed her to a lifestyle of drugs and sex, and that he had given her herpes. Their age difference – he was 25 years older – also became a point of focus.

He also has his fair share of failed relationships and made headlines for his anti-vaccine beliefs.

I still remember being shocked back in 1997 when he unexpectedly grabbed an actress’s head and kissed her at the MTV Movie Awards. It was a really controversial moment that everyone was talking about!

Jim and his family faced financial hardship throughout his childhood, and when he was fifteen, they experienced homelessness.

Jim had to leave school to work as a janitor and help his family financially. He found solace and an outlet in comedy, which helped him cope with the difficulties he faced.

Jim started his television and film career in the late 1970s, but he gained wider recognition in 1984 with his role in the NBC sitcom Duck Factory. He then appeared in the comedy film Finders Keepers.

After his breakout role in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Jim Carrey quickly became a household name and achieved instant fame.

He followed up his success with starring roles in the popular films The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, solidifying his position as a rising star in Hollywood.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Jim Carrey appeared in many popular films, including Batman Forever, The Cable Guy, Liar Liar, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, Me, Myself & Irene, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bruce Almighty, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Fun with Dick and Jane, The Number 23, Yes Man!, and A Christmas Carol.

During those years, he accumulated a whopping six Golden Globe nominations, two of which he won.

Jim Carrey was the first comedic actor to command a $20 million upfront salary for his role in The Cable Guy. According to Variety, this amount has since become the typical fee paid to actors to star in a film.

Despite his growing success as an actor, he experienced a lot of personal difficulties privately.

Throughout his career, he faced difficulties in finding lasting love and experienced several painful, highly publicized breakups. He later became known for being involved in a surprising and tragic lawsuit alleging wrongful death.

Jim’s on-off girlfriend Cathriona White died from a prescription drug overdose in 2015.

Although her death was officially ruled a suicide, her husband, Mark Burton, later filed a lawsuit against the actor, alleging that his actions had caused her emotional suffering and played a role in her decision.

According to The Oxford Eagle, Mark claimed that Jim illegally obtained prescriptions for the sleep aid Ambien and the strong painkiller oxycodone using the name ‘Arthur King,’ and then gave those drugs to Cathriona.

Jim had started dating the makeup artist in 2012, when she was 27 and he was 52.

I was absolutely heartbroken when I heard about Cathriona. Seeing Jim there at her funeral in Ireland, helping to carry her coffin and comforting everyone… it was awful. But then, things just got messy. All sorts of details about their relationship started coming out, and it just made everything so much more complicated and sad. It really changed how I saw things, honestly.

A note written by Cathriona two years before she died revealed how badly she felt the actor had treated her.

Oh my god, it’s just… devastating. Her note, the one she actually wrote on her iPad, was found by the lawyers working for her mom and Mark, her husband. They’re suing Jim, you guys! They’re saying he… he gave her the pills that… well, that he intended to end her life. And it gets worse – apparently he got them using a fake name and… and gave her STDs beforehand. It’s just… I can’t even begin to imagine how awful that must have been for her. It’s horrifying, truly horrifying.

Jim, while you did some kind things for me, being with you ultimately hurt me deeply. I was hoping for the best in you, but instead, I discovered a much darker side, a complete opposite of what I expected.

I would have endured anything, even sacrificing my own happiness for years, just to be with you. But you discarded me as soon as you got what you wanted from what remained of who I was.

She also spoke of the shame she felt over having STDs, which she claimed she’d contracted from Jim.

It really hurt that you never seemed to consider the lifelong stigma I’m dealing with. Not once did you apologize, ask how you could help, or even express any remorse. It felt like my struggles were completely invisible to you.

You’ve caused me significant pain and distress by giving me HSV and HPV, and I need you to apologize. If you genuinely care about me, you’ll understand the gravity of this. Even if it seems minor to you, this has deeply impacted my life and caused me lasting harm.

Please be mindful of your behavior around other girls and aware of how your actions might be perceived by others.

The makeup artist, who is Irish, also stated that before meeting this person, she lived a simpler life but was content and held in good regard.

I was happy with my life, confident, and comfortable with who I was, proud of the choices I’d made. Then I met you, and everything changed. You introduced me to a destructive path of cocaine, exploitation, emotional harm, and illness.

‘You did good things for me but being with you broke me down as a person, Jim.’

I’ve been following this case closely, and it’s heartbreaking to see the details emerge. I learned from the texts that Cathriona became really worried in January 2013, thinking she might have an STD. She reached out to Jim, and his response was… well, he basically said that irritated skin or bumps are pretty common after shaving or being intimate. It’s just awful to see how dismissive he was of her concerns.

The next month, she wrote to him again, mentioning she’d discovered some unusual spots and wanted to get them examined. She explained she’d been tested before they started dating, so she hadn’t contracted any sexually transmitted infections from anyone else.

Jim replied with a text message, breaking up with her. He wrote: ‘I don’t want to talk anymore… I’m done. You’re causing too much drama.’

After her family sued him, Jim filed his own lawsuit, revealing he’d previously paid Cathriona a confidential amount in 2013 to resolve claims related to a sexually transmitted disease. He is now asking her mother and husband to reimburse him three times that original amount.

He initially described Cathriona as beautiful, but also as emotionally vulnerable and not fully mature. He also claimed her previous lawyer exploited her relationship with the celebrity for financial gain.

The actor claimed Cathriona threatened to publicly accuse him of giving her STDs – claims he said were untrue – unless he paid her a large sum of money, essentially blackmailing him.

Jim was proven innocent when his lawyer discovered Cathriona had altered a friend’s STD test results, falsely presenting them as her own. She did this to convince Jim she didn’t have any sexually transmitted diseases before they started dating.

Despite their earlier legal battle, the pair did get back together in 2015.

The actor stated he had forgiven her, and they were continuing to plan their future together. They began drafting a cohabitation agreement to formalize her moving in with him.

He stated she was bothered by his request for her to sign a confidentiality agreement, but otherwise appeared cheerful until she turned thirty on September 14th.

He said her birth mother, Brigid – whom she hadn’t spoken to in years – sent her a hurtful message on Facebook, telling her she was worthless and wouldn’t achieve anything in life.

Jim said she took her own life because of this, and because she felt bad about getting money from him two years before.

I was so heartbroken to learn about Cathriona’s passing. Those who knew her said she struggled with depression, and it’s just devastating. She left behind several notes, and it’s incredibly sad to read them. I remember seeing one from 2012 where she spoke so highly of Jim Carrey, calling him a truly strong and wonderful person. It just adds to the tragedy, knowing how she felt about him even while she was suffering.

‘I love Jim and I’m sorry I brought turmoil into his life,’ she wrote.

A different account emerged in May 2013 through a note she wrote to her lawyer. This note insisted that the public be told he was the one responsible for her death.

I want to publicly share the physical, emotional, and health-related harm that Jim inflicted on me.

‘Unfortunately, I don’t have the the words to put to paper I am too numb,’ she wrote.

Her final suicide note, which were discovered near her body in 2015, was addressed to the actor.

She didn’t appear angry, but suggested their relationship was facing difficulties.

Jim, I really thought we were meant to be together. I truly believed there was something special between us, and I finally felt safe and comfortable with you, confident that we had a future together.

When things fell apart, we always had each other. It’s been three days, and I still can’t believe you’re gone.

‘I thought when I saw you it would be OK again and it’s not,’ it said.

She ended the message with a heartbreaking note: ‘I love you, please forgive me. I just don’t feel like I belong in this world. Sending peace and love to everyone.’

Jim texted to ask about his missing pain medication shortly before the woman’s body was discovered.

According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s report, which was reviewed by Daily Mail Online, Cathriona White died after taking a combination of drugs, including anti-inflammatory medication prescribed to the actor.

Even though the legal case was dismissed, the scandal damaged the star’s reputation, and he stayed out of the public eye until he started appearing in movies again in 2020.

Before Cathriona, Jim had a history of highly publicized relationships that didn’t last. He often blamed his celebrity lifestyle for why these relationships ended.

He married actress Melissa Womer in 1987, and they had a daughter, Jane, that same year.

But their marriage came to an end in 1995, after eight years together.

Melissa described how difficult it was living with someone who was deeply depressed. She remembered him often breaking down and crying on the floor, and she would spend hours – often until four or five in the morning – comforting and talking him through it, night after night.

Jim’s career took off when he starred in the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and he became much happier as a result.

Following the film’s success, he confessed he struggled to adjust to home life. Melissa remembered him saying he preferred to experience his newfound fame as a single man.

He married his “Dumb and Dumber” co-star, Lauren Holly, in 1996, but their marriage ended less than a year later, in 1997.

Jim admitted he hadn’t enjoyed being a highly sought-after bachelor, despite the perception that he could have casual relationships whenever he wanted. He realized that he wasn’t the irresistible man he’d sometimes imagined himself to be.

He claimed he wanted to settle down ‘at a certain point’ with a woman he could grow old with.

Even so, he insisted, monogamy was not man’s natural state. It was certainly not his.

Their marriage to Lauren ended after only eight months, with the divorce reportedly due to disagreements they couldn’t resolve.

I was so excited when Jim Carrey got engaged to Renee Zellweger after they worked together on ‘Me, Myself & Irene’ in 1999! But apparently, he wasn’t in a rush to actually get married. I heard she eventually told him she needed a decision within six months – a real ultimatum – or it was over.

The actor’s indecision led to a heated argument at his Los Angeles house, leaving Renee heartbroken. She ended up taking their planned Christmas vacation – originally intended as a pre-honeymoon – to Hawaii by herself.

In 2002 he was in a relationship with actress January Jones.

He dated model Jenny McCarthy from 2005 to 2010, and then began a relationship with Cathriona two years later.

Jim and Jenny began dating in 2005 and their relationship lasted five years. They bonded over Evan, Jenny’s young son from a previous relationship, who was autistic.

Following their breakup, Jenny publicly criticized Jim, claiming he abandoned a child who considered him a father.

Following his relationship with Cathriona, he began dating Ginger Gonzaga in 2019. They were together for under a year, meeting at a Golden Globes party before ultimately splitting up.

He’s now dating Min Ah, and they first appeared as a couple at the César Awards on Friday.

Jim thanked his family, including his daughter Jane and grandson Jackson, during his acceptance speech.

‘I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah. I love you, Min Ah.

I also want to thank the funniest person I know – my father, Percy Joseph Carrey. He taught me how important it is to love, be generous, and laugh.

I’ve always admired Jim’s honesty, especially when he shared his personal struggles with depression. He explained he’s dealt with it since he was young, and even talked about taking Prozac back in the nineties to help him cope. It’s really brave of him to be so open about it.

He’s stated before that it’s only helpful temporarily and distracts from solving the core issue.

‘I was on it for a long time,’ he said in 2004.

It got me through a tough spot for a while, but I’m clean now. I don’t use any substances – barely even drink coffee. I stay away from alcohol and drugs because I appreciate life too much.

In 2017, he stated he wasn’t experiencing depression, clarifying that he didn’t have a history of the condition either.

I used to struggle with that for a long time, but now when difficult feelings come, they pass quickly. They don’t linger and overwhelm me like they used to.

He explained that he’d stopped worrying about how he’d be remembered, stating, ‘I’ve moved on from that world. It’s no longer who I am.’

I’m not concerned with my legacy or what others will say about me when I’m gone. I simply hope people remember me as someone who brought positivity and kindness into the world – like a pleasant memory or a lingering, comforting scent.

He expressed complete acceptance of all his experiences, both the good and the bad – the difficult parts of life and creative work. He finds a sense of fulfillment when reflecting on everything that’s happened.

Despite the positive developments, he admitted he’s still worried, explaining that while things are improving, there are also significant problems remaining.

Over the past couple of years, some individuals have tried to take advantage of my success, hoping to benefit from it themselves. However, you can’t simply take a part of something built like this. They’ll soon discover that, and it won’t be a good experience for them.

Throughout the 2010s, Jim became involved in several controversies, leading him to withdraw from public life.

He received significant criticism online for his behavior and statements, particularly his contentious views on vaccines.

In 2015, he publicly shared strong opinions against vaccines online. He expressed concerns that ingredients in vaccines were linked to health issues in children, specifically mentioning a rise in autism diagnoses.

But his views were widely slammed due to the lack of medical proof.

In 2022, he came under fire again after he condemned Will Smith over his infamous Oscars slap.

During an awards show, Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will’s wife at the time.

Jim said on Gayle King’s show that the standing ovation made him feel ill. He believes it showed that Hollywood as a whole lacks courage.

It’s never okay to physically attack someone just because you disagree with their words.

As Jim spoke, users on social media started pointing out past actions they disagreed with, accusing him of hypocrisy.

Someone recalled kissing Alicia onstage at the MTV Movie Awards when she was twenty years old.

Video from 1997 shows Jim, who was 35 at the time, forcibly kissing the actress. He grabbed her head and kissed her while she attempted to push him away.

A social media user expressed outrage over an incident where Jim Carrey allegedly forced a kiss on Alicia Silverstone, who was 20 at the time, during a live television appearance. The user stated they were shocked that this act had no apparent consequences for Carrey’s career and used strongly offensive language to condemn his behavior.

Someone else agreed, stating that Jim Carrey committed assault, no matter the ages involved, and that his behavior of forcing himself on others was unacceptable.

Jim and Alicia have never talked about the kiss publicly, but sources say he apologized to her privately after it happened.

While promoting the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April 2022, Jim shared that he was considering retirement from acting as his career was winding down.

However he later returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, claiming he ‘needed the money’.

‘You know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly,’ he said.

When asked about his past comments about retiring, he added, ‘That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah.

‘I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch.’
