Jonathan Frakes Directs Final Star Trek Episode: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 9

Jonathan Frakes has confirmed that the ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be the last Star Trek episode he directs. Written by Kirsten Beyer, based on a story she co-wrote with Kenneth Lin, the episode, titled “300th Night,” is the first part of the season one finale and will debut on Paramount+ on Thursday, March 5th.

Jonathan Frakes started directing while still acting as Commander William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Over the course of his career, he’s directed a total of 31 episodes across various Star Trek series – including Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds – as well as the films Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection.

Jonathan Frakes recently confirmed to ScreenRant that the ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “300th Night,” will be his last directorial effort on Star Trek – at least for now. He stated this in an interview with John Orquiola. You can find his exact words below.

ScreenRant points out that this is the second-to-last episode of Starfleet Academy’s first season and asks if it’s also the director’s final Star Trek episode, at least for now.

Jonathan Frakes: For now, that’s right. I simply wouldn’t have had time to commit to filming other projects.

Filming for seasons 4 and 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds took place in 2025, and the show completed filming in December. Production on season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy started in August 2025 and finished in late February 2026. Jonathan Frakes wasn’t available to participate in 2025 due to his commitment to launching a new podcast, Dropping Names… And Other Things, with Brent Spiner.

Jonathan Frakes recently directed the final episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, a holodeck-based murder mystery called “A Space Adventure Hour.” While well-made, it didn’t receive quite the same positive reaction as his previous Star Trek: Strange New Worlds directing effort, “Those Old Scientists,” which was a crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Jonathan Frakes is a prolific director, well known for his work on shows like Star Trek, Roswell, Castle, The Librarians, and The Orville. He’s also directed the films Clockstoppers and Thunderbirds. But many actors, especially those in the Star Trek universe on Paramount+, consider him a favorite director – a reputation he first earned while working on Star Trek: Discovery. He’s known as a friendly and approachable figure on set.

The eighth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy marks Jonathan Frakes’ most recent directing work in the Star Trek universe, though he’s open to returning. With no new Star Trek projects currently in development, Frakes would gladly direct future installments if Paramount Skydance decides to move forward and whether they continue with Alex Kurtzman as executive producer.
