HoYoverse may be entering the MOBA genre, recent job posting reveals 3D UE5 project

HoYoverse, the company known for games like Genshin Impact and the Honkai series, is now hiring for a new 3D multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. Built using Unreal Engine 5, this project appears to be a significant departure for the studio, representing a new direction in game genres.

Is HoYoverse ready for the MOBA world?

Recent job postings reveal the studio is working on a new multiplayer game built with Unreal Engine 5. It’s described as a 3D MOBA with both player-versus-player (PvP), player-versus-environment (PvE), and cooperative gameplay, suggesting a robust and competitive team-based experience.

I’m all for them moving beyond their usual RPG style, similar to how MOONTON Games successfully tried new things with games like Silver and Blood and ACECraft. Given their high production standards, I believe they could easily create a popular MOBA, particularly if they include characters from their existing games.

Technical requirements hints at serious esports plans

The job description also highlights some interesting technical skills they’re seeking, including experience with Unreal Engine, ECS systems, and replay/automation tools – all things commonly used in competitive gaming. Given the success of MOBA esports, it seems they’re likely planning to focus on competitive games.

The mobile MOBA market is very competitive. Honor of Kings is the most popular game in China, while Mobile Legends: Bang Bang leads globally. League of Legends: Wild Rift and Pokemon UNITE are also fighting for players. While miHoYO hasn’t released a competitive game before, their strong fanbase, unique art style, and technical capabilities could make this venture a success, despite the risks.
