The shocking financial ‘truth’ about the Kyle and Jackie O show: ‘Never made any sense’

A long-time radio industry insider believes the end of the Kyle and Jackie O show might actually be a financial relief for station executives, potentially due to the hefty $200 million contract the pair had. They also suggest there were underlying reasons why the show wasn’t sustainable in the long run.

Everyone was talking about that deal she signed in 2023 – it was the biggest media contract ever in Australia, a full ten years of Jackie O! I can’t even wrap my head around them letting her go after all that!

After Kyle Sandilands made upsetting comments on air that brought her to tears, Henderson informed company leaders she can no longer work with him. Sandilands has been suspended and has 14 days to fix the issue, or he will be fired.

Craig Bruce, a former program director at 2DayFM when Kyle and Jackie O were popular hosts, has commented on the recent conflict.

According to those familiar with the show, many believed it wouldn’t run for the full ten years of its contract, he told the Daily Mail.

These two people were quite different from each other, and they weren’t communicating well when they weren’t on air or during breaks between songs.

Bruce explained that ending their 10-year agreement with ARN, which paid the hosts a reported $200 million in 2023—around $47,000 per episode—would likely be a welcome development for company leaders.

He said the financial side of the show was completely unsustainable. ‘The numbers just didn’t add up,’ he explained, adding, ‘I’m relieved it didn’t go on for a decade, because I have no idea how they would have continued to fund it.’

In ten years, the radio industry likely won’t have enough money to support a show costing $20 million per year, as has been suggested.

The agreement heavily favored Sandilands and Henderson. It was a misstep for ARN to even offer it, and I believe they’re probably glad it’s over now.

Problems brewing behind the scenes of the show caused a very public and emotional breakdown, which made the personal conflict between the two people involved even worse, according to a radio industry insider.

According to Mr. Bruce, a public argument on the radio happened because important discussions weren’t held privately beforehand.

I talked to Kyle last week, and he described a situation where things were quickly falling apart. He said he was live on the air when he realized things were going badly, and he kept making things worse. That’s essentially what ended up happening.

Kyle asking Jackie whether they were both putting in enough effort, or concentrating enough on the product, was a perfectly valid question for a co-host to raise.

The on-air disagreement was unfortunate, but it shows how close these people are. It’s clear there had been underlying tension for a while, and that ten-minute exchange a couple of weeks ago wasn’t an isolated incident.

Let me tell you, things got a little heated on The Kyle and Jackie O Show recently! It all started on February 20th when Kyle Sandilands, 54, suggested that Karl Stefanovic, 51, wasn’t quite as focused on the job as he should be. It definitely sparked a bit of a debate, to say the least!

It really upset me when Kaye Adams started talking about Prince Andrew’s astrology chart on the show. Poor Jane Henderson actually started crying! Apparently, Vanessa Feltz thought Jane shouldn’t even be looking at his chart, considering everything, and it just really got to her.

He strongly criticized his co-star, saying her interest in astrology was interfering with her job and others had observed it too.

When Henderson tried to protect herself and told him he was attacking her, he insisted he was simply sharing what he believed to be true.

An emotional Henderson said she was deeply ‘offended’ by his brutal comments during the clash. 

She hasn’t been on the show since initially taking time off, and was expected to come back on Tuesday.

On Tuesday evening, news came out that Henderson’s contract was ended, but ARN has offered her a chance to host a different show.

Sandilands has just two weeks to save his job. He’s been suspended and given 14 days to fix the problem that led to the suspension, or he will be fired.

ARN sent a written notice to Sandilands, informing him that his actions on the February 20th show were considered a serious violation of the agreement between ARN and Quasar Media.

Mr Bruce said precautions could have been taken to prevent the split. 

‘It doesn’t need to spell the end of a show when those things are going on,’ he said. 

‘They should have been talking more. They should have invested more time in their relationship.

Honestly, as a total fan, the vibe is everything to me! You can just tell when hosts are clicking, when they have that natural connection. It’s the first thing I pick up on, and it makes or breaks the whole show. But, and this is the part that kills me, you definitely notice when they’re not getting along. It’s just…awkward, and it totally ruins it!

He believes listeners have noticed a decline in the quality of The Kyle & Jackie O Show, and he attributes this to a lack of protection for the relationship between the hosts.

Mr. Bruce acknowledged that relationships often end, noting they had been together for 27 years. He explained that while it was a long and successful partnership, they hadn’t dealt with underlying issues years ago, and this ultimately led to the separation.

These popular radio personalities first started working together in 2000, hosting the Hot30 Countdown on 2Day FM.

Kyle and Jackie O began their popular radio show on 2Day FM in 2004, where it ran for ten years. In 2014, they moved their show to KIIS FM.
